RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT Volume:2 Issue:2|2023 www.bjisrd.com Here the poet plays with words again. The word lesson is pronounced as [`lesǝn] or [`lesn] with the sound [ǝ] or without it. In unstressed syllable weak sounds [ǝ] №12 and [ɪ] №2 seem the same. So the little boy thinks lesson is a lessin. This is his first day at school, by this time he has never heard or used this word. Thus he tries to understand it on his own. While explaining it us he creates another thing – glassroom. Here he again confuses with the sounds [k] and [g]. …………………… glassrooms. Whole rooms made out of glass. Imagine. Again suddenly he forgets what about he is speaking and changes the theme: I wish I could remember my name Mummy said it would come in useful. Like wellies. When there’s puddles. Yellowwellies. I wish she was here. The poet draws the nature of little children skillfully here also. Children compare everything with their own little knowledge. Our child, in the poem, believes that useful things look like his willies which help him to get across puddles. In a new place among strange things and other children the poor little thing is so nervous, he even forgets his name, but only children can soothe themselves: I think my name is sewn on somewhere Perhaps the teacher will read it for me. We should mention here one more thing, in the UK children go to school when they are 5-years-old. A 5-years-old child is too little. Little children are always happy and busy with their playing games when they are full. If they are hungry or thirsty they began to worry, nothing else can interrupt them. Besides that, all around adults take care of them. At school an adult person is his teacher, so he/she should be able to feed him, because he/she is a tea-cher. Tea-cher. The one who makes the tea. After reading the poem “The First Day at School” by Roger McGough we can say that “his poems are full of secular fun and display more profound life from the perspective of a child” 4 . Conclusion Poetry performing function shares cultural knowledge about its country, people, their character, dreams, problems and different sides of their life. To show the life around him demands from the poet to see even tiny details of the surrounding, and if he manage the people accept him as a poet. In his country Roger McGough has been named “The Patron Saint of Poetry”. In The Times it was written: “He is a true original and more than one generation would be much the poorer without him...” 5 Fortunately, the generation is not poor; because of McGough’s precious poems they are rich. Roger McGough has written all his poems with love, love for children, for grown-ups – for everyone and everything. “The virtues of his poetry remain very much what they always were – charm, high spirits, and an astonishing capacity for inventing puns.” 6 He is a talented poet and an ordinary person, so his 4 Xu, Meihua.
