× to 11190× magnifications. The pollen and seed-
coat terminology follows Walker & Doyle (2006), Punt et al. (2007) and Stearn (1992), respectively. Results Pollen morphology Pollen morphology of the studied Cistanche species is given (Table 1). Generally, the pollen grains were monad, tricolpate and sometimes tetracolpate, show- ing radial symmetry. According to P/E ratio the shape of pollen grains was oblate-spheroidal to prolate- spheroidal. Pollens were elliptic in equatorial view and circular in polar view. The smallest pollen grains be- longed to C. salsa ( P = 26.48 µm and E = 27.61 µm), and the largest ones to C. tubulosa ( P = 34.86 µm and E = 32.81 µm). The P/E ratio varied from 0.9 to 1.06, C. flava having the shortest (0.9 µm) and C. tubulosa the longest (1.06 µm). Exine was tectate and 1.5–2 µm in thickness. C. ridgewayana Pollens are oblate-spheroidal (Fig. 1), the sizes are (26.56–37.81) × (27.88–30.62) µm, tricolpate (Fig. 2), rarely tetracolpate, exine ornamentation is Microgem- mate (Figs 13, 14), sculptural elements are in polygonal patterns, individual microgemmate mostly pyramidal shaped; there is distance between individual microgem- mates. Perforations diameter of microgemmates is 83 to 291 nm. Cistanche salsa Pollens are oblate-spheroidal (Fig. 3), the sizes are (22.91–31.25) × (25.62–33.75) µm, tricolpate (Fig. 4), exine ornamentation is Microgemmate (Figs 15, 16), sculptural elements in round or polygonal patterns, in- dividual microgemmate is round shaped, individual mi- crogemmates laterally fused. Perforations diameter of microgemmates is 142 to 500 nm. C. ambigua Pollens are spheroidal to prolate-spheroidal (Fig. 5), the sizes are (23.75–33.75) × (24.16–30.41) µm, tricol- pate (Fig. 6), exine ornamentation was Microgemmate (Figs 17, 18), sculptural elements in round to polygonal patterns, individual microgemmate is polygonal shaped and covered with a treated-like material. Perforations diameter of microgemmates is 41 to 140 nm. C. laxiflora Pollens are prolate-spheroidal (Fig. 7), the sizes are (27.5–40) × (29.37–38.25) µm, tricolpate (Fig. 8), rarely tetralobate, exine ornamentation is Microscabra- te (Figs 19, 20). C. tubulosa Pollens are prolate-spheroidal (Fig. 9), the sizes are (29.16–40) × (25.41–36.66) µm, tricolpate to tetra- colpate (Fig. 10), exine ornamentation is Microornate (Figs 21, 22). C. flava Pollens are oblate-spheroidal (Fig. 11), the sizes are (20–33.75) × (33.75–35) µm, tricolpate (Fig. 12), rarely Figs 1–12.
