The Advantages and Disadvantages of KWL Strategy


Every strategy has advantages and disadvantages. According to Ogle (1986: 567), the advantages of KWL strategy are as follow:

  1. It helps students to comprehend by encouraging them to be active questioners, read for specific purposes, and reflect following reading about whether the purpose was met.

  2. KWL process helps students access what they know, decide what they want to learn and whether it is likely to be in the passage, and decide what yet needs to be done after reading.

  3. It helps teachers will be more responsive to students' background knowledge and make reading expository material will be more attractive

  4. It stimulates students‟ active thinking involved in reading for information by doing many benefit things.

While, Ataie (2008:384) explained that the disadvantages of KWL strategy are :

  1. Students will find difficulty to complete the KWL chart sheet on their own if it is using steps of KWL chart with group and or inter class.

  2. The KWL strategy will avoid taking risk and revealing what they know or do not know about the topic.

  3. Students use their native language when they cannot explain what they know or what they want to know in foreign language (English).

  4. Students‟ responses are revealing, because they are more serious when the material is relevant or interesting.



    1. Reading Comprehension of Hortatory Exposition Text


      1. The Definition of Reading

Reading is the skill or activity to get information from reading passages such as books, newspapers, magazines, articles and so on. It is an important skill for students to learn. Because Harmer (2007: 99) states that
“reading is useful for language acquisition, it also has positive effect on students‟ vocabulary knowledge, on their spelling, and on their writing.” In order to know correctly what reading is, there are some definitions of reading below based on some experts.
Moreillon (2007: 10) states that “reading is making meaning from print and from visual information.” It means that reading is an activity to understand information from what we see especially on texts.
Reading is also energetic process that contains identification and understanding competency. As Patel and Jain (2008: 113) explain that “reading is an active process which consists of recognition and comprehension skill.”
Grabe (2002: 9) states that “reading is the ability to draw meaning from the printed page and interpret this information appropriately.” It means that reading is process of looking for sense from reading passages and understanding it precisely.
While according to Brown (2004: 185) “reading is skill likewise a skill that teacher simply expect to acquire.” It means that reading is a skill that the students should be learnt. By reading, the students are able to get a lot of information and knowledge from the text. Therefore, it can increase students‟ knowledge.
In summary, reading is the way to get some information and ideas from written text through process in which the reader can make a decision to confirm, reject, or refine the information itself. According to Grabes‟ statement before, the writer agree that reading is a kind of activity that people need to interpret the printed page through drawing the meaning of that page. Based on the writer research, drawing the meaning helps readers to easily understand what they interpret from the text by making KWL chart. Here, the writer interprets that “drawing the meaning” by linking it with drawing the readers interpretation of the text through KWL Chart in KWL Strategy.
