2.2. Difference Between Verbal and Nonverbal Communication
Communication is the act of interacting and exchanging ideas with other people. There are two primary forms of communication: verbal and nonverbal. With verbal communication, people express their thoughts, ideas, and feelings through spoken or written language. Nonverbal communication uses other methods, such as body language including facial expressions, gestures, and more. We are going to discuss both of these forms of communication to help you understand them better.
What is Verbal Communication
People use verbal communication to express themselves in many ways during discussions, speeches, and everyday conversations. Just how effective this style of communication is can vary. It will depend on a number of verbal communication skills, such as the volume of your voice, the tone you use, the clarity of your speech, and the caliber of the words you use. You’ll probably get some idea of how effective your communication is through the feedback you receive. You can help improve the effectiveness of your communication by considering your target audience and how you can adjust your message so they will pay attention to you and understand you. With verbal communication, you have a lot of control over adapting your message if you feel it is not effective. In order to do this, you should first ensure that you have expressed your intended message. It’s possible for the people to whom you are trying to communicate to misunderstand your words or the intention behind those words.Whether or not your communication is effective depends on the listener as well as yourself, and you can’t control the listener—but you can try to make your message as clear as possible. To do this, you also need to consider nonverbal communication.Nonverbal Communication - Nonverbal communication involves communicating without using words. Although nonverbal communication can emphasize spoken words, it can also contradict them. The three main aspects of nonverbal communication are tone of voice, body language, and eye contact, each of which has an impact on how people receive your message.Verbal and Nonverbal Communication: What’s the Difference? While nonverbal communication involves body language, verbal communication relies on words. There’s more to it than that, however. Proper communication often requires a mix of verbal and nonverbal signals to convey meaning. Consider the differences between these forms of communication and how to use them:1. Delivery: Verbal communication can transpire over the phone, through email, written letters, or a face-to-face conversation. Most nonverbal communication happens only when the two or more parties can see each other.2. Intentionality: A difference between the two types of communication, verbal and nonverbal, is that the words a person chooses—verbal—tend to be intentional, whereas many elements of nonverbal communication can be unintentional or out of a person’s control and impact reception. Nonverbal communication can be unconscious; for example, a person who sweats while talking may convey nervousness..3. Grammar: Verbal speech has patterns and grammar rules to adhere to, whereas nonverbal communication is more fluid.4. Authenticity: Nonverbal behavior like body movements, mannerisms, or physiological responses (blinking or fidgeting) can influence communication, altering the authenticity of your spoken words or causing them to take on a different meaning. Nonverbal messages can be more powerful than verbal communication, as human bodies can subconsciously deliver messages that they are verbally not conveying—“actions speak louder than words.”5. Emotions: Nonverbal cues are especially powerful when communicating with children. A parent’s facial expressions and tone will often express feelings more clearly than using words kids may be too young to understand fully. Nonverbal communication is also beneficial when communicating emotions between a language barrier.6. Engagement: Nonverbal signals are a great way to communicate attentiveness and engagement to those around you. It’s not enough to verbally tell someone you are interested in what they’re saying, controlling your posture and eye contact will demonstrate to others that you are interested, whereas looking around or at your phone can express disinterest, even if that’s not technically the case.
Non-verbal communication and hearing loss -Verbal and non-verbal communication are important ways of sharing messages and emotions with others. This can ring especially true for individuals experiencing hearing loss. However, research has found that hearing-impaired individuals are better at understanding non-verbal communication cues than normal hearing individuals. One reason for this is that many individuals experiencing hearing loss may rely on sign language and speechreading.Hearing loss affects your ability to obtain and interpret information from verbal information. Speechreading integrates verbal communication (if the person is experiencing partial hearing loss or wearing hearing aids) with visual information from non-verbal communication to better understand what someone is conveying. During speechreading, the listener pays attention to the speaker’s gestures, facial expressions, and body language. These non-verbal communication cues provide additional information and context that makes it easier for someone experiencing hearing loss to interpret and understand a conversation.
Benefits of understanding non-verbal cues -When we talk to people, we convey our message through both verbal and non-verbal communication we can build better relationships and have better conversations. Conclusion -Non-verbal cues and language play a vital role in how we communicate, and how we receive and perceive what someone says. But, verbal communication is still the most effective way of getting a message across. But, without proper hearing, that ability is lost. With Lexie Hearing, you can be a part of the conversation again. Best of all, you can adjust your hearing aid setting to whatever environment you are in, using the amazing Lexie App.

CONCLUSION

Verbal and non-verbal communication almost takes place in the same time. In fact, attimes people do not know that they are passing messages without their knowledge. Verbalcommunication involves the use of words to pass messages, whereas non-verbal communicationis a wordless approach of passing messages. There are various aspects of non-verbalcommunication, which include kinesics, haptic and proxemics. In the essays, the focus has beenon kinesics, which refers to the study of body movement. Under kinesics, there are gestures, andthe gestures include emblems, adaptors and illustrators. There has been adequate research onkinesics, and scholars have identified that, some aspects of kinesics are culture-specific. Suchaspects include the facial expressions, posture and eye contact
Non-verbal communication is a vital form of communication. When someone do interaction with others, they continuously give and receive countless wordless signals or usually understood as the process of communication through sending and receiving wordless messages. It includes overt behaviours such as facial expressions, eyes, touching, and tone of voice, as well as less obvious messages such as dress, postures, and spatial distance between two or more people. Thus, in nonverbal communication teacher interacts with the students by using gestures. And by its meaning the students know what the teacher means. Based on the researcher finding, the researcher formulated the conclusion into the types of nonverbal communication used by English teachers’ at Senior High School 3 South Solok, teacher A used almost all of types of teachers nonverbal communication. They were kinesics, vocalics, proxemics, and chronemics. Teacher B used four types of nonverbal communication. They were kinesics, vocalics, proxemics, and chronemics. And teacher C also used four of this type. They were kinesics, haptics, vocalics, proxemics, and chronemics. The first is kinesics refers to body movement and postures and includes gesture, head movement and posture, eye contact and facial expression. Second haptics refers to touch behavior that conveys meaning during interaction. Third Vocalics is study of paralanguage, which includes the vocal qualities that go along with verbal messages, such as pitch, volume, rate, vocal, quality, and verbal fillers. Thus proxemics refers to the 56 57 use of space in communication between teacher and students. The last Chronemics refers the study of how time affects communication and includes how different time cycles affect our communication. It can conclude the English teacher in this school dominant used all of the types well. So, how the teacher used this types in this school are doing well. B. Suggestion After doing the observation in the field and analyzing the collected data, the researcher states insightful suggestions at this point. The researcher suggests all of English teachers’ to know about the types of nonverbal communication. It is important to make the students easy in understanding the material. Then, by doing nonverbal communication, the teachers’ be easy to explain the material to the students. If the teachers’ is known the types nonverbal communication, the teacher can know the better types that should be given when teaching activity. With this types, the English teacher will know about the students’ ability or achievement which the teachers’ nonverbal communication or attention with giving nonverbal communication. Then, for the next researcher, this research can give the advantages to do the new research. After reading this research, the next researcher can find the new idea and this research also can be the sources to continue the research. After the next researcher knows about what are the types of teachers' nonverbal communication, the next researcher can do the research about students’ attitude when the teachers’ gives nonverbal communication or what are the effects to the students after the teachers’ gives nonverbal communication.Everyone uses nonverbal notes, nonverbal communication is the task of receiving messages without using words. Nonverbal communication is an important role in everyday life. Improving nonverbal communication can increase your ability to relate, and engage, etc. Nonverbal communication can include eye contact, tone of voice, facial expressions, posture, and gestures. There’s more to nonverbal communication than people realize. Nonverbal communication has a lot of differences. Background knowledge may affect the way they read nonverbal behaviors. Mental health influences on someone’s body language (like social anxiety). Neurotypical people may also interpret or use body language differently than neurodiversity people do. With a genuine, and true smile, the mouth will turn upwards. Language is a metaphor in the sense that it not only stores but translates experience from one mode into another. Verbal and nonverbal expressions of status and male/female differences are the most important features of differentiation in the dynamics of human interaction. The extracting of meaning from a verbal or a nonverbal act has to do with discovering the motivation for the act.
