1FARZONA CP IN LEXICOLOGY
CONCLUSION
In conclusion, the purpose of my work is giving general information about word formation, it’s types and more spefically about shortening, showing importance of shortening in medicine. As new words in everday use are being created, word formation plays a significant role in building these words by using the types of word formation in order to create comfort in communication. The analysis was performed to work on shortening and and how often it is used in this field by both doctors and patients was shown with exact facts. As a result of the research, new rules related to the topic were cited, opinions of scientists were given with their examples within combinations, contrasted these ideas with those of another scientists. While word-formation is widely used, there are still unsolved problems. I will cite some major problems that are being faced. Word-formation has not yet received attention in generative grammar yet, probably because it is interim problem between fully or not fully established morpho-phonological possibilities and the problem of the lexicon, which has not yet been worked out. The first step for this is separation of grammatical and lexicological derivatives. This is necessary in order to show what belongs to the lexicon and what does not. If we take D – derivation, StM – stem and SuM – suffix when they are carried by differen elements of the syntactic construction, e.g. StM: predicate, word qualified (by an adjective) and SuM: adverb, adjective, its formula: D (StM+SuM) – SC (syntactic construction) (StM and SuM) If this transformation is carried out, the derivative is grammatical; it does not belong to the lexicon. So the problem is the generating of derivatives requires a semantical solution. Another problem that may arise is although shortening is used frequently in each field, the understandability of new and specific shortened words are still making its users struggle. For example, Medical abbreviations appear extremely fast in modern English, evidenced by abbreviations that are not registered in dictionaries. As a result, the main problem of medical abbreviations translation is that the same abbreviations may have different meanings, depending on the disease, anatomy, or procedure being discussed. Some of the linguistists used such research methods as the method of component analysis of meaning based on dictionary definitions, the method of contextual analysis of the abbreviations, identifying their situational relevance. That is why, non-familiar abbreviations and acronyms are misunderstandable withing patients. To tackle this problem, ordering of abbreviation in medicine can be achieved through a more thorough study of medical abbreviations, their proper use in medical professionals training and by means of modeling, which fixes the most convenient, concise and succinct clichés in medical discourse. The next problem is seen in clippings, this type of word-formation is still not aware by people. And also, there is also many similarities of another types of word building such as affixation, blending, compounding, abbreviation and acronym. So that reason, that would be more confusing. This type should be widely used within people to make it daily use. Overall, in my opinion common problems that are exist in present day in word-formation and it’s types are the result widely using of old materials that can not match with today’s word building processes with creation of new words. To eliminate major and minor problems, some deep researches should be taken, sources should be renewed and reworked by professional linguists and these resources should be made widely available for learners.
