INTRODUCTION
This course work is dedicated to the information about shortening and the classification of word-formation types in English Language.
The term “Word-formation” is used with reference to the forming new words as well as for the branch of linguistic investigation aiming at peculiarities of lexical units in the language.
Topicality of the work. The President of Republic of Uzbekistan Sh.M.Mirziyoyev’s mentioned in his new resolution No. PP-5117 of May 19, 2021 "On measures to bring the quality of popularization of the study of problems in the Republic of Uzbekistan to a new level" pays special attention to the English language¹. Every language is in constant need for new words. Because of these new inventions and changes, a language needs to borrow, derive or otherwise coin new words simply because new things need names. The formation of words does not just appear like that out of the blue, but rather, there are several methods that are used to create new words. So word formation increases the importance of language. When a language creates new words, by borrowing for instance, it not only helps maintain that language's own vitality but also other languages can borrow from the initial language. Shortening as a type of word-formation plays important role in the forming of the words. As we live in the era of technology, almost everywhere we face new words, advertisement logos and so on. In each field people prefer to use words which are convenient and easy to read in a short version. The problems of shortened lexical units as specific language phenomena in modern languages attracted attention of many researchers. The spoken and the written forms of the English language have each their own patterns of shortening, but as there is a constant exchange between both spheres, it is sometimes difficult to tell where a given shortening really originated. The main reason for choosing this topic is that there are many words and word groups which have their shortened version. Very often those shortened words occur in various texts, such as technical writing, statistical material, tables and notes. I decided to look up what abbreviations are commonly used in mass media, informational and technical sphere, especially in newspaper articles and textbooks. The other reason is to figure out when and how abbreviations are used in written language.
