The scope of research. The term “Word-formation” is used with reference to the forming new words as well as for the branch of linguistic investigation aiming at peculiarities of lexical units in the language. There are some scholars who did research in word-formation and in it’s types. For example, Ginzburg (new words are created after certain structural and semantic formulas and patterns); H.Marchand (told about word-formation as the forming new lexical units or words); Sheard (gave conclusion as building of word-formation by adding prefix and suffixes). Shortening is the main types of word-formation and in this course work, information about word-formation, it’s types and general and special characteristics of shortening will be investigated; Arnold I.V. in his book “Лексикология современного ангдийского языка” emphasized word formation processes and abbreviations and clippings; E.M. Mednicova (the process of forming words by combining root and affixal morphemes according to certain patterns specific for the language); A.I. Smirnitsky (the system of derivative types of words and the process of creating new words from material available from the language). One of the Russian linguistists Kubryakova Y.S. has written a book which is specialized for giving information about word-formation in English lexicology called “Что такое словообразование?”.²
A.Muminov also learned importance of word formation, its branches and how importance shortening has in lexicology and compared it thoroughly with its early researches in his “Lexicology in English language”.³ The problems commonly faced in shortenings were clarified deeply in “Problems of th english abbreviations in translation” written by Kuzmina.O.K, Anna D.F., Natalia. A.A. Shirokix, L.P.Kudrevatix gave briefly introduction to word formation process in his their book ”Теоретические материалы по лексикологии современного английского языка”
In the process of preparing course work, I have read thoroughly these linguists’ works and learned about word-formation and mainly shortening.
The aim of the investigation. To explore shortening, its types and functions in modern English lexicology and learning frequency of being used in medical field.
