The tasks of the investigation.
– to look through branches of English lexicology;
– to investigate word-formation, it’s types and it’s productive and non-productive types;
– to analyze each type;
– investigate shortenings, giving examples for each and mentioning problems with their solutions.
The object of the research. Different types of shortenings in English language.
The subject of the research. Word formation processes in English language and its types.
Methods of the doing this research. Comparative, theoretical and practical ways to explore thoroughly.
Scientific novelty. In this course work, I explored shortening and its types in English language; I calculated with using diagrams how often shortening types are used in medicine between both doctors and patients in one of the English-spoken country. According to my collection data, abbreviations are most commonly used type of shortening, and acronyms are followed by abbreviations. The least used types are clippings in medicine.
The theoretical and practical importance of the investigation. As shortening in modern English the most productive for the lexical bulk in general, the modern pace of life demands to convey a great bulk of information as quickly as possible, saving the space written. Shortening reflects the general trend of simplification of a language, closely connected with the development of modern informational technologies. Another theoretical importance of the work is having based upon this, we are able to formulate the general goals of the work.
The practical significance of the work can be concluded in the following items:
