Apartment ( flat) - квартира

Luggage - багаж

Countable and uncountable nouns.

Compare these two lists of nouns:



  1. Coin, detail, job, chair

  2. Money, information, luggage, work

The words in list A are names of things you can count. They are countable nouns.

The words in list B are names of materials or things we see as “mass”. You cannot count them, they are uncountable.



Countable nouns have a singular and plural form. Most plural forms of countable nouns ends in –s :

minute – minutes, brother – brothers, boy – boys, leaf – leaves.

Some plural forms are irregular:

child – children, woman – women, one salmon – three salmon

With countable nouns you can:


  1. Ask the question How many…?

How many students are there?

  1. Use a/an, some, any, one and other numbers

Do you have an apartment or a house?

She has some friends in Tashkent.

He owns three cars.

Uncountable nouns always go with a verb in the singular. You can:


  1. Ask question How much…?

How much time do you have?

How much water do you want?



  1. Use some or any ( but not a/an or a number)

I have some information for you.

I’m sorry, there isn’t any wine left.

Some nouns are countable when they mean ‘a type of’ or ‘a cup/glass of’ and uncountable when they have a general meaning:

I’d like a glass of water. (countable) / Windows are made from glass. (uncount.)

Would you like a coffe? (countable) / Where does coffe come from? (uncount.)

With uncountable nouns you can use a word of phrase which shows a part or a quantity of something:

A piece

A litre



Half a bottle

Two bars


Word “People” is always plural:

There were 3000 people at the match.

Some people still think the world is flat.

The words much/many and little/few are used to show the amount of something.



Much and little are used with uncountable nouns, while many and few are used with countable ones.
