INTRΟDUCTIΟN
One of the most representative writers of Victorian era and first great popular novelist in England remains Charles Dickens. His full name is Charles John Huffam Dickens. Charles Dickens was born in 1812 in Portsmouth , a coastal town in England. He was an English writer and social critic. He created some of the world’s best-known fictional characters and is regarded by many as the greatest novelist of the Victorian Era. Dickens is remembered as one of the most important and influential writers od the XIX th century. In addition , his majority of novels include symbolism. What is the symbolism?
Symbolism is a literary and artistic trend that declared itself in Europe at the end of the XIX century, associated with the renewal of poetic language and general cultural thinking. Through poetry, symbolism has connected itself in different countries (France, Belgium, Great Britain, Germany, Russia, Poland, etc.) with prose, drama, literary criticism, painting, music, theatre, philosophy and theology.
First of all, symbolism is an intuitive comprehension of world unity through the symbolic unity of the surrounding space. The relevance of symbolism in our days is well expressed in the words of V. Ivanov: "One can talk about symbolism only by studying the work in its relation to the perceiving subject and to the creative subject, as to integral personalities. Hence the consequences:
1) Symbolism lies outside aesthetic categories
2) Each work of art is subject to evaluation from the point of view of symbolism
3) Symbolism is connected with the integrity of the personality, both the artist himself and the one experiencing artistic revelation"[7, pp. 608-611].
Each work can be considered from the point of view of symbolism, it depends on our perception whether this work is symbolic for us or not.
In our work, we consider the practical use of symbols on the example of Charles Dickens' novel "Dombey and Son", which is of particular interest to the researcher, since this topic is still insufficiently studied.
Charles Dickens is a world–famous English writer, novelist and essayist, a classic of world literature, one of the greatest prose writers of the XIX century. Dickens' work is attributed to the heights of realism, but his novels reflected both sentimental and fabulous beginnings. Many features of Dickens' talent are vividly reflected in one of his best novels – "Dombey and Son Trading House, Wholesale, retail and export Trade" (hereinafter "Dombey and Son"). In this novel, Dickens created a special object world that distinguishes him from all other works of the writer. The subject symbols used in the novel contribute to a deep understanding of the social and moral idea of the entire work.
All of the above has determined the relevance of our research.
The degree of study. This topic in the scientific literature is reflected in the works of such domestic authors as: S.S. Averintsev, G.V. Anikin, A. Bely, E.Yu. Genieva, A.F. Losev, N.P. Mikhalskaya and foreign authors: Colin McCullough, Stephen Bateman, Angus Hyland, G.K. Chesterton and others.
The object of our research is a symbol with its inherent features and functions.
The subject of the study is the implementation of the subject symbol in fiction on the example of the novel by Charles Dickens "Dombey and Son".
The purpose of the study is to study the use of symbols in works of art, to consider the symbol in the aspect of a certain historical epoch and to find its reflection through the implementation of the symbol in the author's work. In this case, in the novel by Charles Dickens "Dombey and Son", which will allow us to call the great writer not only a realist, but also a symbolist.
To achieve the purpose of the study , the following tasks were set:
- study the symbols, their features, clarify the definition of the symbol;
- identify the main characteristics of the symbol;
- consider the functions of the symbol;
- consider the creativity of Ch . Dickens as a "symbolist";
- analyse the reflection of subject symbols in the novel by Ch .Dickens' Dombey and Son.
Methods of scientific research. To solve the tasks of our thesis, the following research methods were used: synthesis and analysis; ascent from the abstract to the concrete; methods of comparison and generalization.
The practical significance of this study lies in the fact that its conclusions can be used to study the peculiarities of the implementation of subject symbols in the works of Charles Dickens in classes on foreign literature by students of the philological direction.

The structure of the thesis. This work consists of an introduction, two chapters, a conclusion and a bibliography.‌‌
