VERSION 1
Economic progress is a more conventional way of determining a country’s success,
and there are many other factors such as education, medicine and level of crime that
need to be taken into account. In my opinion, all of these factors are equally
important to a country’s progress, and therefore we cannot point to just one.
In addition to economic development, any country’s success nowadays is measured
via its social development as well. This includes, but not limited to, the quality of
education and medicine. In other words, in order to have higher standards of living,
people should have access to top-notch schools and state of the art medical facilities
across the country, not just in urban areas. This social equity is an important factor
when measuring the country’s overall progress.
Equally important are people’s safety and their freedom to express themselves
without facing any consequences. When safety is concerned, a primary indicator is
the level of crime existing in the country. Therefore, for a country to be considered a
desirable place to live, those living there should not have any irrational fear of crime.
When I visited the UAE as a tourist, I was quite impressed with safety measures and
almost non-existing levels of crime in the street. It is no wonder that Dubai has
become a favourite destination for many people whether for a permanent or a
short-term stay. Another key factor is the right to self-expression without the fear of
facing any consequences. People should be able to express their opinions freely
without having to ‘pay for it’. In other words, even in countries like France, some
people can still fall victim to hate crime for expressing their feelings about certain
issues.
In my opinion, we cannot pick any one factor ahead of others. All of the factors
discussed in this essay are equally important in any country’s success. In fact, these
factors are interconnected to each other in the most intricate ways that the absence
of one is likely to affect others. For instance, without high levels of education, crime
rates are likely to increase. Likewise, when crime rates are high, people are less
likely to feel safe about freedom of expression.
In conclusion, apart from economic development, different aspects of social
development including education, health care, safety and a freedom to
self-expression are as important in any country’s success. Of all these factors, we
cannot name any one being more important than others as they are intertwined in a
very complex relationship. The downfall of any one factor might lead to a collapse of
the whole social construction that determines the success level of a country.
