Always start the visa procedure well in advance of your planned visit to Italy and make sure to review the 
Embassy website for information before you visit the visa office.

the registration to the Italian National Health Service ensures that foreign citizens will receive 
an equal treatment and full equality as concerns rights and duties compared to Italian citizens
regarding health 
care provided in Italy. 
The Italian National Health Service does not cover you while you are abroad (out of 
Italy). 
Be aware that 
you can also apply for an 
Italian Tax Code (Codice Fiscale) at the Italian Embassy or Consulate in your 
home Country.
 
The tax code is a personal alphanumerical code that uniquely identifies the subjects within the Italian State, as far 
as tax and administrative matters are concerned. The tax code is one of the required documents to get the residence permit 
(Permesso di Soggiorno), to rent a room and open a bank account. Please note that the temporary tax code issued upon your 
registration in Alice web portal (the University of Pisa registration web portal) or Universitaly web portal will be is not 
considered as valid . 
 
3. How to apply for Italian scholarships: relevant documents
There are several scholarship opportunities for foreign students. To apply, you will need documentation that 
you can start collecting right now in your country.
DSU scholarship
The Tuscan Regional Agency for the Right to Higher Education (DSU - Diritto allo Studio Universitario) allocates 
grants based both on the financial income (only for the first year) and on financial income and merit (subsequent 
years). A DSU grant entails free meals and accommodation (starting from mid-October), and exemption from 
University tuition fees. Usually, applications are open from the end of July to the end of August and you can apply 
online on the DSU portal.
International students residing abroad have a high chance of being granted the DSU scholarship, provided 
that they submit all the required documentation by the deadline which is set each year in the relevant notice.
Over 227 international students were granted a DSU grant in the academic year 2022/2023. The 
required documents include the family’s gross income and assets owned in the year before the application 
submission.

These documents are usually issued by the public authorities of the country where such income was earned. 
Moreover, these documents must usually be translated into Italian, legalized by the Italian Embassy/Consulate of 
the country where they were issued, and submitted to the DSU in their original format.
