WHAT IS WORD FORMATION? - Word formation can be considered from 2 aspects:
- As a branch of Lexicology which studies the ways and patterns of creating words in languages
- As a subsystem of language means and regulations functioning specifically for creating new words.
- The English language possesses both universal and unique patterns of word creation due to continuous interrelationship with many languages in the course of its historical development.
WHY WE NEED WORD FORMATION SYSTEM? - Word Formation is that branch of the science of language which studies the patterns on which a language forms new lexical units, i.e. words;
- By word-building we understand processes of producing new words from the resources of this particular language;
- The need for new words is satisfied mostly by creating new words following the existing patterns;
- English has about 15 ways of making words;
- Together with borrowing, and semantic derivation, word-building provides for enlarging and enriching the vocabulary of the language.
What is a neologism? - A neologism (niːˈɒlədʒɪzəm/; from Greek νέο- néo-, "new" and λόγος lógos, "speech, utterance") is a relatively recent word or phrase that may be in the process of entering common use, but that has not yet been fully accepted into mainstream language;
- A newly coined word or expression, or use of new words;
- Origin: From early 19th cent.: from French néologisme
