DEVELOPING INTERCULTURAL COMPETENCE USING ACTIVITIES WITH DIFFERENT MEDIA
Conclusion
Pupils seem to be really interested in different cultures, there is no racism among them. They like to work with different media, but they are not used tobe creative. Thus at the beginning it is very difficult for them to participate in this kind of activities. They know a lot about intercultural issues, they usually know how a good intercultural relation should be, but also they admit that in many situations it is difficult for them to put in practice those knowledge. There are numerous films about intercul - tural topics suitable for use in the classroom. Appendix 2 contains a list and a synopsis of several recent and older films that are of intercultural interest. Films are readily avail - able from video rentals, libraries, and the Internet. DVDs in English can be purchased at reasonable prices online. Scenes of many of the films mentioned in this article can be watched on YouTube, and it is also worth searching YouTube for vignettes related to intercultural communication, body language, or culture shock. Film is a rich resource for the language learning classroom, especially at the advanced level, when students can appreciate and benefit from the complex themes and resulting discussions. Instructors who use film in the classroom will find that the use of authentic language combined with thought-provoking drama broadens cultural competence and improves the learning of English.
