A UK-based web resource aimed at the UK higher and further education community and providing definitions of the terms used in learning technology standards. The Encyclopedia of Educational Technology: http://coe.sdsu.edu/eet/ Published by the Department of Educational Technology at San Diego State University. Articles are available on the topics of instructional design and education and training. It is aimed at those with minimal experience in the field. E-learning Guru Glossary: http://www.e-learningguru.com/gloss.htm Describes itself as the ‘world’s biggest, or at least most irreverent, e- Learning glossary!’ Defines a variety of terms associated with e-learning and also includes a monthly newsletter you can subscribe to. A small number of terms and acronyms and abbreviations associated with virtual learning environments and digital libraries are defined below. ALT Association of Learning Technology – professional body to represent learning technologists Electronic Resources in the Virtual Learning Environment CETIS Centre for Educational Technology Interoperability Standards CMC Computer Mediated Communication DC Dublin Core – metadata standard to describe library resources DfES Department for Education and Skills – UK government department responsible for education DiVLE Digital Library and Virtual Learning Environments – a JISC programme of research investigating integration between these two fields DOI Digital Object Identifier HE Higher education – the collective term for universities in the UK ILTHE Institute of Learning and Teaching in Higher Education, now being replaced by the Higher Education Academy IMS IMS Global Learning Consortium Ltd – responsible for specifications and standards in learning technology JISC Joint Information Systems Committee – funded by UK higher education funding councils LOM Learning Object Metadata – metadata used to describe ‘learning objects’, which are any digital resource used in learning, for example a piece of content, a self-test, a PowerPoint presentation, etc. LMS To a librarian this term means Library Management System, but beware, learning technologists may mean Learning Management System – or VLE – when they use this term LTSN Learning and Teaching Support Network MLE Managed Learning Environment MCQs Multiple Choice Questions – often used in online assessments NSF National Science Foundation OAI Open Archives Initiative OCLC Online Computer Library Center – a non-profit, membership, computer library service and research organisation.
