Summary of Approaches: TBL (Task-based learning) or The silent way - The task is the primary focus of a this class and the students must focus on achieving this task in order to be successful. Specific language must be used to complete the task, but the language does not take centre stage as the most important factor. A typical TBL class may start with an introduction to introduce the topic. The teacher elicits language from the students which will help them complete the task, and may show a video or an audio recording of people doing the task. The learners will then plan the task before finally practising it for themselves.
Summary of Approaches: Grammar focus or The lexical approach - This method is focused on learning a particular grammar point. It is highly deductive and can sometimes be dull for the learner. It will be based around learning grammar rules and practising the grammar in a controlled manner. One variation of this is the Grammar-Translation Method. This is considered the 'classical' method and is rarely used today, except for some countries who like this approach.
Summary of Approaches: 1. The Lexical Approach or 2. Communicative approach ____This approach is based around being able to communicate real meaning through language. The idea is that when learners are required to communicate in real situations, they will develop natural strategies and thought patterns, leading to more successful communication. This type of approach focuses more on skills than grammar, it emphasises the importance of all four language skills and aims to achieve 'communicative competence'. It is an approach that tends to promote fluency over accuracy and is very student-centred ____This approach is based on the idea that learning language in 'chunks' is beneficial for the learners. For example, a class might consist of learning language chunks, which can be used in a restaurant to order food. The focus of this class wouldn't be around grammatical structures but fixed or semi-fixed pieces of language. However, due to the lack of focus on grammar, it doesn't focus too much on improving learners' accuracy.
