  • The word "none" can be singular or plural.
    None of us is sad. Correct
    None of the sponge cakes are appealing. Correct

  • Unless it relates to an arithmetic value, "number of" is plural.
    A number of desserts are missing. Correct

  • The noun which comes after "all," "any," "most," and "some," as well as terms like "half of," "the majority of," and "a proportion of," defines the verb.
