1 0 7 Track 30 My m o th e r to n gue is H u ng aria n. It is spoken in H u ng ary and it is a m in o rity la nguage in the s u rro u n d in g co u n trie s , e s p e c ia lly Rom ania. It is not p a rt of th e sam e language fa m ily as European la ng uag es like E nglish, French, G erm an o r Russian. It is a U ra lic language, d is ta n tly re la te d to F inn ish and E stonian. Because H u ng aria n is not a w id e ly spoken language, if you w a n t to get on, you have to speak a foreign language. U n s u rp ris in g ly , th e m ost p o p u la r second la nguage am ong H u n g a ria n s is E nglish, the g lo b a l language. Like m o s t of m y frie n d s , I am m u ltilin g u a l - as w e ll as H u ng aria n, I am flu e n t in E nglish and G erm an. I can also get by in Ita lia n and I did an evening cou rse in S panish a fe w yea rs back, but I'm a bit ru s ty now. I seem to pick up la nguages qu ite easily, helped, I'm sure, by th e fact th a t la nguage te a ch in g in H ungary is so good - it has to be, given th a t n o -on e spe aks o u r la ng uag e but us! N ow it's seen as in d is p e n s ib le and you w o u ld fe e l le ft out if you d id n 't have one. B ut as I said before, I th in k it's b e tte r to m ee t up w ith frie n d s tha n to c o m m u n ic a te using technology.
