In this example, yikes is an example of an interjection as it is a word that is

usually only spoken but has been written down to maximize the impact upon
the reader. Saying I am going to be late only shows to the reader that you are
late. Whereas with the addition of yikes, you have made it clear that you are
worried that you are going to be late and feel strongly about it.
It is obvious that, as with abbreviations, interjections live mainly in the world
of informal language. That being said, they can be useful when writing
creatively as they certainly pack a punch and convey a meaning that you
wouldn’t get if you didn’t use one.
