The problem of the influence of the electromagnetic radiation on living organisms causes serious debates in our society and

among scientists more often nowadays. The topicality of this problem is connected with the increasing intensive influence of

the electromagnetic radiation on both grown-ups’ and children’s health.  The results of my studies prove that high radio-

frequency mobile telephone have negative influence on morphological and physiological particularities of the cell. That’s why

I offer some rules of the safe usage of mobile telephones which are illustrated on a special safe tape.

Fractal geometry is the branch of mathematics which studies the properties of fractals. However, its appropriate algebra, i.e. the

fractal algebra so far does not exist. Thus the aim of the treatise is to propose appropriate mathematical functions for fractal

algebra. This is done on the basis of alternation of the core of theoretical models, i.e., the set theory.

Some negative effect of washing and cleaning mixtures on environment can be solved by using new kinds of surface active

agents in the compositions. The main aim of the  project was to design and test an environment friendly cleaning composition

usable for cleaning  in bath and kitchen.

The tests of application behaviours show, that good cleaning effectiveness of product  can be reached by well designed

concentration of components. When mixing organic components with good biodegradability and absence of phosphates and

inorganic salts in the composition, the new designed cleaning paste could be classified as an environmental friendly product.

An increasing number of pathogenic bacteria have become resistant to antibiotics.

Bacteria resistance to antibiotics is caused by doctors’ improper use of antibiotics. In this research, we have tried to investigate

to what extend education influences the knowledge about antibiotics and the prevention of bacterial infections in teenage

population. The conclusion of our research is that information about antibiotics, bacterial infections and standards of hygiene

should be included in school curricula as well as provided by doctors to their patients.

A growing environmental problem is the emissions from the transportation sector. A lot of work is done throughout the world

to find new solutions to that problem. This is a comparative study of regular diesel fuel and the ecofriendly fuel EcoPar.

Experiments were conducted to show the difference in how the ecofriendly fuel, EcoPar and diesel affect the growth of plants,

cell division and health, human’s metabolism and the health of worms.  We wanted to find out what effects residues, fuel vapour

and spill at accidents have on animals and plants.

DEVELOPMENT OF A SYSTEM FOR THE LOCAL PREVENTION OF CATHETER ASSOCIATED URINARY TRACT INFECTION

Silvana KONERMANN

Career intention: neuroscientist

Hobbies: cello, dancing, painting

What do you do when your grandmother is sick in hospital? You try to find a way to stop it happening again and so Silvana

Konermann has developed a new, more efficient way to prevent urinary tract infections, which is also less harmful to the patient.

Post-operative urinary tract infections, caused by the use of catheters, are recognised in the medical literature to be an unsolved

problem. But the use of normal oral antibiotics does not provide a solution.

The reason for this is a biofilm which develops on the surface of the catheter and once it has developed protects the bacteria

which live in it against the treatment with antibiotics. Silvana Konermann has developed and investigated a variety of ways to

impregnate the catheter itself with antibiotics. The most successful approach proved to be the use of high-tech polymers

hydrogels with the antibiotic Norfloxacin. And since the drug is administered locally, the patient's native bacterial flora remains

otherwise unaffected by the therapy.

CONSTRUCTION OF A LOW COST WING-IN-GROUND-EFFECT CRAFT

Some time ago we stumbled upon a toy model of a Russian wing-in-ground-effect (WIG) craft. We were puzzled by its strange

form and construction. This and the fact that the ground effect seemed to be largely unknown to the general public, motivated

us to investigate the ground effect in itself and the potential advantages offered by the WIG crafts.

Due to the scarcity of references dealing with the experimental side of the ground effect, we planned to devote the first half of

our work to a detailed investigation of the conditions necessary for a stable and controlled flight of a WIG craft. For this we

constructed our own wind tunnel and conducted several experiments to investigate the experimental side of the ground effect.

The second half of our work, based on the experimental results referred to above, was devoted to the construction and flight

tests of two low cost model WIG crafts. In the end we were able to witness successful test flights slightly above the ground and

demonstrate convincingly the substantial use of the ground effect by our model WIG crafts.

We hope that the ground effect has a bright commercial future. For instance, as an ecological and sometimes much more rapid

substitute to standard means of transportation, such as aircraft and ships. In addition, we fancy the use of WIG design elements

to improve the fun factor of, for instance, water skis or wakeboards.

This thesis combines the domains of electro-technology, engineering, programming and 3D animation. We were able to realize our

concept precisely because we learned intensely about all of these. We created two robots which play “Cat & Mouse”.

The small “E-Scape” robot is able to detect any obstacle within a certain distance and dodge it. The second has optical sensors to track

the other robot and callipers to detect walls. It is equipped with a small onboard-camera which sends a video stream to a television.

Both robots are powered by electric motors and act completely independently by collecting environmental data with sensors. Micro-

controllers process this data and drive the robots. By creating 3D models of the robots, we were able to test our concept and create

photo-realistic computer renderings. In addition, we programmed an application called “AI-builder” which enables the user to build

the artificial intelligence of the robots by means of a very user-friendly interface. It also contains a program which simulates the

behaviour of robots whose AI was constructed in the AI-builder. This helped us to find the best strategy for each robot.

In this project, a multi-sensor system has been designed using materials readily found in the electronics industry, based on the

concepts that “gases will create homogeneous mixtures among themselves” and that “heat will cause gas to rise,” and the

“vacuum water pump principle” used in chemistry. A high vacuum suction force has been created in this system using a method

of by-pass, causing gases to evacuate the environment. Following the performance of on site experiments, the same system has

been applied to a scale model, the objective of the study being to show that such a system may easily be employed in daily life

and thus be used in the prevention of all kinds of gas poisoning.

Tobacco smoking provokes many serious changes in the organism. Some substances in tobacco smoke can be partially

neutralized and excreted by kidneys. The purpose of this research was to determine the influence of tobacco on urine surface

tension (ST), as a parameter of the functional status of the kidneys in teenagers and adults, and to investigate the  possible

correlations between urine ST and external breath function, as a parameter of lungs` functional status.  Our investigation proved

that there are positive correlations between vital lung capacity  and dynamic parameter of urine surface tension ST

In this project, the characteristics of the thermoacoustic engine were first studied using the “Acoustic Laser” concept. A passive

thermoacoustically enhanced convection engine capable of improving the cooling effect of microelectronic devices was then

proposed. This design has the advantage that no additional energy input is required, a contrast to the usage of mini-fans in

today's computers. A testbed combining a heated NiCr wire with a glass tube was used to examine the overall cooling effect. In

order to evaluate its performance, we measured the following parameters: radiation, convection, conduction, and acoustic

radiation. We found that the heat caused by today's microelectronic devices is sufficiently high to trigger the thermoacoustic

effect. Based on this finding, we designed a new configuration to utilize this thermoacoustically enhanced convection to

significantly lower the temperature. Our approach has a potential application to tackle the heat problems caused by the rapidly

advancing microelectronic devices.
