MY ANSWER TO TERRORISM (SOME TECHNICAL SOLUTIONS FOR THE STRUGGLE AGAINST TERRORIST EXPLOSIONS) Alexander PETRENKO City/Region: Moscow School: Bauman Moscow State Technical University Career intention: the engineer-mechanic Hobbies: PC, sports, Military technologies, history of wars and battles e-mail: arli-e@mail.ru The purpose of this work was to find technical solutions for the struggle against terrorism. As a result some devices have been invented. They are: the device for restriction of explosive effect of explosive objects on board vehicles, the device for mine clearing with tightening target sensor and the explosion-proof dustbin. All of them have been recognized by specialists and two of them have been patented. One of the devices is in a batch production, the other two are being prepared for manufacturing. STUDY OF THE INFLUENCE OF THE ELECTROMAGNETIC RADIATION ON LIVING CELL Igor YAROSHEVICH City/Region: Moscow region, Krasnoznamensk School: Municipal providing general education Gymnasia №2 Career intention: biochemist Hobbies: skate boarding The problem of the influence of the electromagnetic radiation on living organisms causes serious debates in our society and among scientists more often nowadays. The topicality of this problem is connected with the increasing intensive influence of the electromagnetic radiation on both grown-ups’ and children’s health. The results of my studies prove that high radio- frequency mobile telephone have negative influence on morphological and physiological particularities of the cell. That’s why I offer some rules of the safe usage of mobile telephones which are illustrated on a special safe tape. SLOVAKIA FRACTAL ALGEBRA Matej KORBEL City/Region: Banská Bystrica School: Gymnázium Jozefa Gregora Tajovského Career intention: theoretical physicist Hobbies: astronomy, dog, football e-mail: praesepae@gjgt.sk Fractal geometry is the branch of mathematics which studies the properties of fractals. However, its appropriate algebra, i.e. the fractal algebra so far does not exist. Thus the aim of the treatise is to propose appropriate mathematical functions for fractal algebra. This is done on the basis of alternation of the core of theoretical models, i.e., the set theory. APLICATION OF THE HENRY-DALTON LAW METHOD OF WATER DEGASSING AND SEPARATION OF DISSOLVED GASES František MALINA City/Region: School: Gymnázium Považská Bystrica Career intention: entrepreneur, civil engineer, designer Hobbies: graphic design, web design, family, science The main aim of this work is to explain physical mechanism of degassing natural water and to find ways of its utilization, to provide instructions for constructing an efficient appliance to supply man with respiratory gases under water. The aim is to find ways of using gases dissolved in water and degassed water. Project is based on Henry and Dalton law, which determine dissolving of gases in liquids. On this idea is based an appliance which can create two products with wide application possibilities of using. 74 75 PROLIT-A NEW DESIGNED CLEANING PASTE Juraj OHRADZANSKÝ City/Region: Prievidza School: The Associated Secondary School of Chemistry Career intention: chemist Hobbies: sports (field hockey, volleyball), computers Some negative effect of washing and cleaning mixtures on environment can be solved by using new kinds of surface active agents in the compositions. The main aim of the project was to design and test an environment friendly cleaning composition usable for cleaning in bath and kitchen. The tests of application behaviours show, that good cleaning effectiveness of product can be reached by well designed concentration of components. When mixing organic components with good biodegradability and absence of phosphates and inorganic salts in the composition, the new designed cleaning paste could be classified as an environmental friendly product.

You try to find a way to stop it happening again and so Silvana Konermann has developed a new, more efficient way to prevent urinary tract infections, which is also less harmful to the patient. Post-operative urinary tract infections, caused by the use of catheters, are recognised in the medical literature to be an unsolved problem. But the use of normal oral antibiotics does not provide a solution. The reason for this is a biofilm which develops on the surface of the catheter and once it has developed protects the bacteria which live in it against the treatment with antibiotics. Silvana Konermann has developed and investigated a variety of ways to impregnate the catheter itself with antibiotics. The most successful approach proved to be the use of high-tech polymers hydrogels with the antibiotic Norfloxacin. And since the drug is administered locally, the patient's native bacterial flora remains otherwise unaffected by the therapy. CONSTRUCTION OF A LOW COST WING-IN-GROUND-EFFECT CRAFT Dominique Alain SEURET City/Region: Luzern School: Kantonsschule Willisau, Schlossfeld Career intention: mechanical engineer Hobbies: sport (volleyball, snowboarding etc.), modeling, music e-mail: d_seuret@gmx.ch Some time ago we stumbled upon a toy model of a Russian wing-in-ground-effect (WIG) craft. We were puzzled by its strange form and construction. This and the fact that the ground effect seemed to be largely unknown to the general public, motivated us to investigate the ground effect in itself and the potential advantages offered by the WIG crafts. Due to the scarcity of references dealing with the experimental side of the ground effect, we planned to devote the first half of our work to a detailed investigation of the conditions necessary for a stable and controlled flight of a WIG craft. For this we constructed our own wind tunnel and conducted several experiments to investigate the experimental side of the ground effect. The second half of our work, based on the experimental results referred to above, was devoted to the construction and flight tests of two low cost model WIG crafts. In the end we were able to witness successful test flights slightly above the ground and demonstrate convincingly the substantial use of the ground effect by our model WIG crafts. We hope that the ground effect has a bright commercial future. For instance, as an ecological and sometimes much more rapid substitute to standard means of transportation, such as aircraft and ships. In addition, we fancy the use of WIG design elements to improve the fun factor of, for instance, water skis or wakeboards. City/Region: Wetzikon School: Kantonsschule Zuricher Oberland Wetzikon Career intention: engineer (electronics, robotics) Hobbies: electronics, robotics, poetry (reading and writing), playing piano, music, photography e-mail: sdahinden@gmx.ch This thesis combines the domains of electro-technology, engineering, programming and 3D animation. We were able to realize our concept precisely because we learned intensely about all of these. We created two robots which play “Cat & Mouse”. The small “E-Scape” robot is able to detect any obstacle within a certain distance and dodge it. The second has optical sensors to track the other robot and callipers to detect walls. It is equipped with a small onboard-camera which sends a video stream to a television. Both robots are powered by electric motors and act completely independently by collecting environmental data with sensors. Micro- controllers process this data and drive the robots. By creating 3D models of the robots, we were able to test our concept and create photo-realistic computer renderings. In addition, we programmed an application called “AI-builder” which enables the user to build the artificial intelligence of the robots by means of a very user-friendly interface. It also contains a program which simulates the behaviour of robots whose AI was constructed in the AI-builder. This helped us to find the best strategy for each robot. Christoph WANGLER City/Region: Luzern School: Kantonsschule Willisau, Schlossfeld Career intention: mechanical engineer Hobbies: sport (badminton), modeling, music e-mail: christoph_wangler@gmx.ch 80 81 A MULTY - SENSOR HYPERVENTILATION SYSTEM TO PREVENT ALL TYPES OF GAS POISONÍNG Rudi Ruben MACA City/Region: Istanbul School: Ulus Özel Muzevi Lisesi Career intention: Industrial Engineer and Economics Hobbies: Drama, playing Guitar, playing football, Crosswords, Reading Books e-mail: smatch1@superonline.com In this project, a multi-sensor system has been designed using materials readily found in the electronics industry, based on the concepts that “gases will create homogeneous mixtures among themselves” and that “heat will cause gas to rise,” and the “vacuum water pump principle” used in chemistry. A high vacuum suction force has been created in this system using a method of by-pass, causing gases to evacuate the environment. Following the performance of on site experiments, the same system has been applied to a scale model, the objective of the study being to show that such a system may easily be employed in daily life and thus be used in the prevention of all kinds of gas poisoning. UKRAINE THE CHANGES OF URINE SURFACE TENSION WITH TOBACCO SMOKERS Mariya PALIYENKO City/Region: Kiev School: O.O.Bogomolets National Medical University Career intention: psychophysiologist Hobbies: listening to music Tobacco smoking provokes many serious changes in the organism. Some substances in tobacco smoke can be partially neutralized and excreted by kidneys. The purpose of this research was to determine the influence of tobacco on urine surface tension (ST), as a parameter of the functional status of the kidneys in teenagers and adults, and to investigate the possible correlations between urine ST and external breath function, as a parameter of lungs` functional status. Our investigation proved that there are positive correlations between vital lung capacity and dynamic parameter of urine surface tension ST 0,01
, in smoking adult men and women - ST 1 . The dynamic tensiometry can be used as an effective method of exposing of tobacco smoking influence on the functional activity of human kidneys. UNITED KINGDOM HOW FISHY ARE PRAWN CRACKERS? Andrew ADAM City/Region: Scotland School: Hutchesons’ Grammar School Career intention: medicine or biomedical science e-mail: andy_adam15@hotmail.com Emma LINDSAY City/Region: Scotland School: Hutchesons’ Grammar School Career intention: medicine Hobbies: Sport, especially field hockey e-mail: emslemon@hotmail.com It was suspected that some prawn crackers may contain very little actual prawn. Electrophoresis was used to analyse prawns and prawn crackers. Although slightly inconclusive, experimental results confirmed this suspicion. Qualitative protein analysis also suggested that the 'prawn' used for prawn crackers may be of questionable origin!

82 The Jury USA ENHANCED COOLING OF MICROELECTRONIC DEVICES BY USING THE THERMOACOUSTIC EFFECT Pen-Yuan HSING City/Region: Taipei City, Taiwan R.O.C. School: Taipei Municipal Lishan Senior High School Career intention: Astronomer, Mechanicial Engineer, Ecologist Hobbies: Piano, Environmental Protection e-mail: penyuan@hotmail.com or penyuanhsing@yahoo.com.tw In this project, the characteristics of the thermoacoustic engine were first studied using the “Acoustic Laser” concept. A passive thermoacoustically enhanced convection engine capable of improving the cooling effect of microelectronic devices was then proposed. This design has the advantage that no additional energy input is required, a contrast to the usage of mini-fans in today's computers. A testbed combining a heated NiCr wire with a glass tube was used to examine the overall cooling effect. In order to evaluate its performance, we measured the following parameters: radiation, convection, conduction, and acoustic radiation. We found that the heat caused by today's microelectronic devices is sufficiently high to trigger the thermoacoustic effect. Based on this finding, we designed a new configuration to utilize this thermoacoustically enhanced convection to significantly lower the temperature. Our approach has a potential application to tackle the heat problems caused by the rapidly advancing microelectronic devices.
