Nowadays by the advent of the computer in Biology, as in other sciences, it has become possible to work with an enormous

quantity of data in a short time. The micro array’s technology is based on genetic researches both on healthy and sick people,

in order to underline which genes could be considered responsible for some illnesses.

We compared genetic expression of two different groups of people and we built a referring table where the genes are in the

rows and the patients in the columns. This matrix is composed of one and zero. The zero represents the normality, the number

one shows that in the patient the gene we are speaking about is over expressed or under expressed.

We have considered more than 3.000 genes. The Shapley’s index is based on the coalition concept, which is an under set of the

whole of players. So in our game, the coalitions are about 23000! It means that any calculus is possible without a strong

calculator instrument. We used the “R” program in order to find the index.

This is software for supporting of the mode determination. It is based on Microsoft excel. It is very helpful for scientists who

study stones, particularly igneous rocks or granite. They could get the rate of ingredient in a sample instantly with color graphics.

It is very important step to know the constituent to study stones.

They use this software to analyze the mineral elements by percentage of a sample. In the past, they used to tally the number of

small stones, which compose the sample on a paper. It is original software that manages to save energy and time.

It is easy for anybody to use and has a simple design.

Most probably you have heard something about the fast Formula 1 fellows like Schumacher brothers. But have you ever

wondered why there are so many weird wings and plates all around their racing cars? Or have you ever seen the most modern

and fuel efficient vehicles that resemble nothing but a rain drop?

In his research project, the author engaged himself in designing, constructing and operating such a test facility that allows

studying flow patterns around bodies and aerodynamic forces on them. During various wind tunnel tests, the constructed

instrumentation was found to work accurately and to yield meaningful results.

Roads, electronic schemes and human brain are all used as networks for rearranging various items in different order. Ever since

the 19th century numerous methods have been designed to optimize the rearranging, and they have proven to be particularly

useful in such fields as logistics and programming. This project focusses on exploring how particles can be rearranged by means

of networks. They identified the ultimate number of particles which can be rearranged by using networks with one entrance

and many exits or one exit and many entrances. They proved that this number is equal to the number of ways in which the

network can be crossed by a single particle, and have shown why it is true for all networks of such kind independently on any

other feature, like crossroads which seem to perplex the movement of particles.

The problem of environmental pollution becomes more and more important. An example is the leakage of oil. It is a reason for

developing new methods for fighting pollution. Using organoclay is one of these methods.

There is a great quantity of Trias clay in Latvia but it is not suitable for industry. As this clay is especially suitable for preparing

organoclay, Latvia could take advantage of its raw materials for solving problems of environmental pollution.

It is impossible to get exact results in contemporary many-electron atoms theory, as in all other many-particle quantum systems.

At this point new methods are very important. One of them is isospin method. In this new method all main atom theory

quantities can be determined. For this purpose we gained original results. The mathematical aspect of isospin formalism was

explicated, the main theoretical relations and expressions were found, that are necessary for the main atomic quantities

(coefficients of fractional parentage, transformation matrices, physical size operator’s matrices elements and etc.) analysis.

INFLUENCE OF IRON ORE FIELDS ON DISTRIBUTION OF RADIOACTIVE 137CS AFTER THE ACCIDENT AT THE

The accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power-plant in 1986 constructed a laboratory for a large-scale experiment, designed to study spread of radioactive pollution over huge areas. There are well known

climatic, meteorological, geologic, topographic etc. factors, influencing uneven distribution of the radioactive nuclide 137Cs. However, the path of Chernobyl radioactive cloud, crossing the iron ore fields

near town Varena (Lithuania), predetermined favorable circumstances to study the influence of serpentine magnetite ore deposits on redistribution of the radioactive pollutant 137Cs.

Taking into account identical meteorological, geologic and topographic factors in the studied zones, and the fact that the 137Cs radionuclide is carried by the smallest aerosol fraction, we propose a

hypothesis: lower mushroom radioactivity above the serpentine magnetite ore deposits could be explained by the influence of the natural magnetic fields, producing magnetic anomalies in those areas.

Finally, we suggest to employ artificial magnetic fields for protection of important areas from 137Cs contamination in case of accidents, followed by radioactive pollution, or to cover nuclear power-

plants with protective magnetic shields to prevent radioactive nuclide leakage by air.

The aim of the project was to investigate the properties of physiological and morphological changes during adaptation process

of American cranberry to unoptimal acidity of substrate in vitro and ex vitro. The investigation was carried out with three

cultivars of cranberry: ‘Bergman’, ‘Bain 10’ and ‘Black Weil’. The change of morphological parts of plant during the adaptation

process was measured. The amount of monosaccharides in microshoots growing in medium of different acidity was evaluated

by using high-pressure liquid chromatography. The impact of photon flex density and wavelength on ‘Bain 10’ microshoots

adaptation process was investigated.  It was established that ‘Bergman’ and ‘Black Weil’ are more adaptive to the pH of substrate

than ‘Bain 10’. Also, light of different wavelength may influence microplant’s reaction to different acidity of nutrient medium.

The investigation has shown that the change of the amount of monosaccharides in microshoots depends on the acidity of

medium. It is supposed that pH of substrate has influence on photosynthesis mechanism in plant and the amount of

monosaccharides characterize the level of adaptation.

Our work deals with the autumn galls found in the area Lei (near Dudelange) and the area Leiffrachen (near Kayl), both situated

in the south of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.

We formulated two questions and tried to get suitable answers to the following:

– Which gall-builders are to be found during autumn in the selected area?

– Which kinds of animal species are resulting by being cultivated in the galls produced by Diplolepis rosae?

As a result we came to the following statements: We could prove with their identification, the existence of 8 gall-builder species

in the Lei area and 11 gall-builder species in the Leiffrachen area. We identified for the first time the existence of one species,

namely Cryptomyzus ribis (currant blister aphis), in the iron mine area of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Another rare species,

Neurotems fumipennis, was found again, 95 years after its first notification in the Grand Duchy. Further investigation would be

required in order to be able to conclude if the gall-builders are driven out by civilization and its accompanying symptoms.

Ants (Hymoptera Formicidae) are foraging insects that damage food and property but have their place and use in the ecosystem.

For most people they are a nuisance and pest.  According to Indian folklore many household spices have been used for repelling

ants and other insects that enter the house.  It is believed that plants have evolved ways to repel ants, as ants are poor pollinators,

and thus plants may emit chemical toxins in their nectar or essential oils.  Spices are direct plant products, and so they may

contain ant repellant toxins and essential oils.

The purpose of this project is to identify and evaluate the ant repelling properties of certain household spices. The aim is to find

natural products that are effective at repelling ants, safe to use in a household situation, biodegradable, and are easily available.

The aim of this project is to produce biogas from grinded waste organic matter, cut by 2 S-shaped blades powered by a 230V

motor with a 50Hz frequency and with a maximum input power of 350 Watts. The matter is then preserved in a black-sprayed

plastic container, which can absorb heat from the surroundings, hence facilitating anaerobic digestion. An extractor, when

switched on, creates pressure so that the gas enters a container and is kept there, due to the presence of one-way valves. When

another valve is opened, the flammable biogas is ignited, generating renewable energy. The sludge in the containers can then be

dried and used as compost.

The homelessness among dogs is an increasing problem. The shelters for homeless dogs are the “lesser of two evils”.

Unfortunately while staying there the dogs are exposed to the bad impact of a prolonged stress. The aim of this project has been

an attempt to relieve stress in dogs by applying the selected compositions of classic music. The animals were observed both in

normal conditions, and in the course of music therapy, additionally with analyzing the differences in noise level. She found that

the reaction of dogs has individual character. However, most animals calmed down at the sounds of music and the amount of

aggressive behaviours diminished.

Agata has been interested in variable stars which, unlike ordinary stars, mostly change their brightness regularly with periods of

hours, days or years. In previous two years she travelled 60 km nearly every weekend from her home to the Torun University

Astronomical Observatory in Piwnice to survey large areas of the sky in search for variability. During analysis of the collected

data she discovered some completely new, short period variable stars. One of them: BD+14°5016 appeared to be a very special

system consisting of two stars with a hot spot between them. Further investigations of this system resulted in interesting

conclusions about such stars in general.

Contemporary agriculture is strictly connected with common use of artificial fertilizers and plant protection chemicals, among

others herbicides. Apart from desired effect of weed elimination, applied herbicides may also cause imperceptible changes in

the development and activity of soil microorganisms. The aim of this project was to evaluate the influence of a new herbicide

on entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium flavoviride – one of the most important insecticidal fungi. Kamila found that each

concentration of the herbicide inhibited its growth but even the highest concentration of the herbicide didn’t kill the fungus.

Kamila’s conclusion is that the use of herbicides leads to qualitative changes in ecosystems and may limit the role of

microorganisms as natural insecticides.

ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY OF HEATHER

Heather is a common shrub in “Serra da Estrela” whose flower heads are used in folk medicine. An extract of this plant was made

and used to assess its antioxidant properties. The heather extract that I prepared showed significant antioxidant capacity, as it

can be seen by the results obtained on protection against lard peroxidation. Although lard used in my experiments already has

an antioxidant as additive, the heather extract demonstrated the capacity to increase still more the protection against

peroxidation in a significant way.

Probably this activity is due to flavonoids that are present in the heather extract, because they are known to act as good

antioxidants in several conditions, and a variety of them were already identified in this plant.

This project is the result of several years of experience. I had the idea to miniaturize the classic process to make holograms

because it was heavy, and because it was expensive.

After the sand box system was tested, the first good results were achieved. Today, the project aims at two main objectives:

– from a scientific technological point of view, to prove that a low-priced set of an holographic system may give good results,

as a professional set does;

– from a scientific sociological point of view, to facilitate the spread of science, with an easy way of doing it, as a seed to promote

the contact with physics.

Remotely, the portable system may be replicated in order to reach a wide range of schools.
