l a £ o r e . E a r l y H i s t o r y . The lo c a l traditio n is that the A p o s tle St. Thomas was mart yred at T b o m a s ’ Mount and in terred at old Myla- p o r e which lies buried under San T h o m e ; and that there was a su c ce s sio n o f Bishops at old M yla pore and in Malabar, till the time o f a gre at per sec u tio n — the re viv al o f Brah manism — when the Bishops and the priests, to geth er with a la rg e n u m be r o f Catholic*, h a v in g been put to death, the rem n an t fled to the mounta in ranges that separate M alaba r fro m the east o f Souther n India ; and the e pis co p al s u c c e s s io n b e in g in te rru pted, when tbe last o f their priests die d out they contin u e d to keep up their faith by c e rtain re ligio us p r a c tic e s and su rreptit ious visits to the g r a v e o f St. Thom as, rendered p ossib le by old M yla pore h av in g been partia ll y ov erw helm ed by the sea, when the Brah m ins deserted it and fou nded the present M jla p p r e , M uch o f this is su ppo rte d by e ojl ate ral ev id e n ce , and will poin t to a chu rc h o f some sort h a v in g existed on the side where the A p os tle was bu ried. A n d .in deed, to tbe early M ah om m adan A r a b n av iga to r s, old M yla p o r e was not kn own as M y la p o r e - but as Betumah, i.e., house, chu rc h o r town of St. Th om as, S$n Th ome. It is this c h u rc h that the A m b a s sadors o f A l f r e d the Great, K i n g o f E n g la n d , are su pposed to have visit ed in A . D . 883. H o w be it it is an h is to ric al f a c t that the subseq uen t r eviv al o f Christian ity in India was du e to Persia n m erchants, in whose wake their N es to r ia n c le r g y follow ed. Th us it happened than when M ar co P o lo visited the place in the thirteenth ce n tu ry and later on the blessed O deri c de B a rdon e there was a co m m u n ity o f Nesto ria n Christians at San Thom e, a chapel ov er tbe tomb o f St. Thom as and a N e s tor ia n m o n a s te r y on the hill at St- T h o m a s ’ M ou nt. AH o f these in stitutions fell into dis re p air by the end o f the 16th ce n tu r y, when Mar Elias, the Nestojriac Bish op o f M alaba r, m a de a futile appeal to have them r epaire d.
H e n c e when the P ortu gu e se Com mis sion appoin te d by desire o f K in g. John I I I o f P ortu ga l to search for the c o u n te r p a r t o f the Ortona R e lics o f St, Thom as , £eiwjhe£} Sfi:n , Thom e . in 1523, it fo u nd n oth in g but a heap o f ruins.
This was reported to the V i c e r o y , D. Duarte . Meneaes, M iL A P Q R B . 8 5 who o r d e r e d the chapel to be rebu ilt. It wets while the fo u n d ations for thjsrchapel were b e i n g du g, ¡that the Po rtu gu e se stumbled on tbe g r a v e o f the A p os tle and the Re lics tbey had sou ght for. Pr esen tly the hermits o f St. A u g u s tin e established a P r io ry in San Thom e and to ok c h a rg e o f the G rave o f the Apostl e, St. Th om as, a d j o i n i n g which they built a small church.
This chu rc h was made the Parish c h u rc h o f San Th ome iu 1558, when the D io cese of Coc hin was erect ed and com prehen ded San Thome. H e n ce the Par ish Prie st o f San Thom e is still called “ Th e P r i o r , ” It was this chu rch again that was made the Cathedral on the c rea tio n o f the D io cese o f San Thom e in 1666. It was su bsequ en tly ex ten de d. The o r ig in a l chapel o f the G rave, the a d jo in in g Au g us ti- nian c h u rc h and its extension, ju st spoken of , st ood in tact till 1863 when Mgr. Reed da Silva pulled them do w n, together with the Old P r io r y , for the pu rpo se o f bu ildin g the present G oth ic Cathedral on their site. His L o r d sh ip had the pleasure of co m p le t in g the new Cathedral and o f h avin g it con s ecr ate d by H. H . Mgr. Valente, the Patriarch o f the East Indies, on May 10, 1896. The Dio ce se was co n s e cr a t e d to the Most Sa cred Heart o f Jesus on the ¡¿2nd June 1900. The T r icen ten a r y o f the Dio ce se was cele brated with great solem nity on Janu ary 9, 1906, tbe Delegate A p o s t o l ic and 16 Bishops g r a c i n g the o c c a s io n with their presence. On this o c ca s io n Dr. Th eoto niu s de Castro, the present B ish op, had tbe foss e o f the G ra ve o f St. Thom as unlarged, and faced with beautifu l ma rble, to enable p il grim s to have ac cess to the bottom of the g r a v e and to enable M.-tsses to be celebr ated im mediately o v e r the G rave, a c c o r d i a g to the p r a c tic e o f the early Christians. In J a n u a ry , 1912, the 4tb E u eh aris tic Congress in Tndia was held at San Thome in which fou rt een Bishops to ok 'p a r t. F o r m e r P r e l a t e s .
