Sampling terminology

  The class from which we select the sample are called the study population.
  
• 
  Group of students from whom we collect information is called the sample
  
• 
  Number of students whom we obtain information is called the sample size.
  
• 
  The way we select students is called sampling design or sampling strategy.
  
• 
  Each student that becomes the basis for selecting the sample is called the sampling unit or sampling element.
  
• 
  A list identifying each student is called the sampling frame.
  
• 
  The findings based on the information obtained from the respondents – sample, are called sample statistics.
  
• 
  The estimates arrived at from sample statistics are called population parameters or the population mean
  

Step V: writing a research proposal

A research proposal, tells a reader about the research problem and how we are planning to investigate. Broadly, a research proposal’s main function is to detail the operational plan for obtaining answers to the research questions. In doing so it ensures – and reassures the readers of – the validity of the methodology to obtain answers accurately and objectively.

A research proposal must tell us, the research supervisor and a reviewer the following information about the study:

What we are proposing to do?

How we plan to proceed?

Why we selected the proposed strategy?

Therefore it should contain the following information:

• 
  a statement of the objectives of the study;
  
• 
  a list of hypotheses;
  
• 
  the study design we are proposing to use;
  
• 
  the setting for the study;
  
• 
  the research instrument(s) we are planning to use;
  
• 
  information on sample size and sampling design;
  
• 
  information on data processing procedures;
  
• 
  an outline of the proposed chapters for the report;
  
• 
  the study’s problems and limitations;
  
• 
  the proposed time-frame.
