agnostic: A person who accepts agnosticism.
agnosticism: The refusal to believe either that God exists or that he does not exist,
usually on the grounds that there can be no sufficient evidence for either belief.
ahimsa (Sanskrit): nonviolence.
anthropomorphic: Humanlike. An anthropomorphic conception of God ascribes
human attributes to him, usually personality traits, such as a sense of justice or jealousy, sometimes (as in Greek mythology or children’s stories) physical attributes as well.
Apollonian (Nietzsche): The rational principle in art; form.
a priori (knowledge): “Before experience,” or, more accurately, independent of all experience. A priori knowledge is always necessary, for there can be no imaginable instances that would refute it and no intelligible doubting of it. One might come to know something a priori through experience (for example, you might find out by dividing the circumference by the radius in thousands of circles that in each case the result is p), but what is essential to a priori knowledge is that no such experience is needed.
asceticism: A philosophy of rigorous self-discipline and abstinence, rejecting as much as possible the comforts, luxuries, and pleasures of the world.
atman (Sanskrit): The transpersonal, supreme self, which is the same in everyone.
atom: One of the smallest possible material bodies. Atoms are the building blocks of reality. Democritus is credited with the first atomic theory. John Dalton is the father of the modern theory, which is the basis of modern chemistry.
avatar: A god embodied in human form.
axiom: A statement that is true by definition or is so obviously true that it need not be proved and so may be used without further debate as a starting point of argument.
