The Absolute Participial and Non-Participial Constructions 
 
1. The Nominative Absolute Participial Construction is a construction in which 
the participle stands in predicate relation to a noun in the common case or a pronoun in 
the nominative case; the noun or pronoun is not the subject of the sentence. 
In the Nominative Absolute Participial Construction both participles can be used. 
This construction is generally rendered in Russian by means of an adverbial clause. It is 
used in the function of an adverbial modifier. 
 
2. The Prepositional Absolute Participial Construction is a construction 
introduced by the preposition (with). It is rendered in Russian by a coordinate clause or a 
structure with an adverbial participle (деепричастный оборот). In most cases it is used 
in the function of an adverbial modifier of attendant circumstances. 
 
3. The Nominative Absolute Construction – here we do not find a participle. It 
is used in the function of an adverbial modifier of time or attendant circumstances 
mainly. 
 
4. The Prepositional Absolute Construction – here we do not find a participle 
either. In most cases it is used in the function of an adverbial modifier of attendant 
circumstances 
Participial constructions are characteristic of formal written English. In 
conversational English all these kinds of participial constructions are commonly 
replaced by various types of subordinate clauses. The only participial construction which 
is commonly used in conversational English is the Objective Participial Construction.
