may,
can, AND could
A.
Read about may, can, and could
In the reading passage, Beth asks for permission to go with her mother with the
question: May I go. . .? To the modern reader, this sounds old-fashioned
because May I questions have become very formal—most people don’t use

Eating In, Eating Out | 123
them within the family anymore. There are, however, situations where questions
with May I are very appropriate:
• A clerk in a store asks, May I help you?
• When you ask a favor of a stranger you can use May I; for example, Excuse
me. May I take this chair?
• At someone’s home, you can ask, May I use your restroom?
All of these questions can also be asked with can or could, but may is much
more formal.
Note: May requests are only used with the subject I. When the subject is
you, you must use can or could.
Excuse me. Could you help me with this? Can you pass the butter?
Can is less formal than could.
