Question 04
Do you have any training for yourself and for your employees? (See figure 2.5)
According to most researchers, Lack of training and knowldge of the business is one of
the main reasons why the SMEs are facing problems these days. It is very common in Sri Lanka
to start a Micro Business maybe with 2 or 3 people , with the basic capital and a place of
work. But later on they face the problems such as bookkeping, lack of techincal knowledge on
the business, balaning the supply chain etc. Resulting either the business to go bankrupt or to
hire a professional to aid them in the critical situation or blindy to pump money in to the
business.
Figure 2.5 Response to Question 04(Author Construction)

39
Here in the results, 50% of the responders have responded that both the owner and the
Employees are trained, whil 28.6% have responded as owners are trained and the employees
are not trained.8.6% have responded as neither the owner or the employees are trained.With the
results we can see that at least 92.9% out of the responders have either a trained employee or a
trained owner or both, and its a very satisfying and at the same time there is a 8.6% of business
owners whom might or might not survive in the long run, depending on their future decisions.
Question 05
Do you think government's support is sufficient? (See figure 2.6)
Governments throughout the world have begun to consider what they can do to promote
the growth of SMEs and enable them to contribute to the national economy. However, there is
a significant gap between governments' objectives and their grasp of the demands and issues
that SMEs encounter. Governments frequently want to encourage SMEs to conduct business
with them, but they themselves do not do so sufficiently.Their proposals frequently include
financial conditions that are unrealistic for SMEs, effectively excluding them from the
competition. In some circumstances, there may be barriers.Furthermore, governments
frequently postpone payments, which may be acceptable to large corporations but can be fatal
for small businesses.
Figure 2.6 Response to Question 05 (Author Construction)
As shown in the results above, 52.9% of the responders have mentioned that they think
that the governmnt support is insufficient while the rest of 47.1% says its sufficient.Its almost
a tie as both are very close by percentages. The reason for a answer like this might be that some
people already think that the Government has already done evrything that they are capable of

40
and the rest must be managed by the people themselves and some people think that the
govenment involvement is not even close to what they are expecting. Many of the support
mechanisms for SMEs and entrepreneurs were in the form of loans, which if unwound too
quickly might trigger a wave of bankruptcies, jeopardizing the recovery.Government assistance
has also been less effective in reaching smaller and younger businesses, as well as the self-
employed, women, and minority entrepreneurs, exacerbating already existing inequities.
