How can we achieve gender equality in the STEM sector?

The demand for STEM (science, technology, engineering, manufacturing) professionals is expected to grow around 8% by 2025 and employment in STEM-related positions about 6.5%. The under-representation of women in STEM translates into the huge loss of talent, thoughts and ideas, as half of the population is not included, which will undoubtedly hider country’s development potential.
As we can see the demand, we need more young women and girls who are pretty good at science, technology, engineering and manufacturing. According to this education system we
The fact that we are having less and less women students engaging in STEM sphere we are losing way more opportunities as women are just half of the world, I think it is very unfair for women not to be able to show their ability and contribute to society as women are half the population and their talent is necessary to meet the challenges and solve scientific and social problems. Increased female participation in science is key to tackling major global challenges such as climate change, not least because it contributes to a better understanding of the impacts of climate change on various communities and helps develop a more effective and sustainable response to the climate threat.

In light of this, here are some thoughts on what we can do to tackle inequality:

1. WE NEED TO BREAK THE STEREOTYPES IN EDUCATION

A study among primary school students showed that boys strongly considered that STEM subjects are more suitable for boys than for girls. Highlighting stereotypical gender roles, also, another study illustrated that first-year university students expressed negative stereotypical beliefs of women's engineering and mathematical abilities. According to the study, those beliefs were more endorsed among male students.
Girls and young women need to actively engage in computer-science-related activities right from a young age to provide them with the personal encouragement they need to trust their abilities. These efforts will affect their career choices later in life and provide them the necessary confidence to feel as they are able to pursue a career in STEM.

2. WE NEED TO IMPROVE THE WORKPLACE CULTURE AND CONDITIONS

It has been proven that some of the main reasons behind women leaving STEM jobs include: hostile working environments, lack of career advancement and recognition, the assignment of boring tasks and, finally, pay gaps.
Promoting diversity and constantly improving the workplace conditions, is a systematic effort in which all professionals need to become part of the solution: evaluators, HR recruiters, managers and C-suite members.

The fact that we are having less and less women students engaging in STEM sphere we are losing way more opportunities as women are just half of the world, I think it is very unfair for women not to be able to show their ability and contribute to society as women are half the population and their talent is necessary to meet the challenges and solve scientific and social problems. Closing the STEM gap isn’t up to the students alone. It’s up to us — to change our behaviors, strategies and systems so that these classes and careers reflect the diversity in our communities.’ Brad McLain, National Center for Women and Information Technology (NCWIT)
The research pointed to five categories for taking action:
Provide role models. Girls and young women have a hard time picturing themselves in STEM roles. Seeing women who work in STEM and technology helps remind girls they have a place in these fields if they want it.
As women and girls don’t tend to work in STEM sphere it is quite difficult for girls to imagine themselves in the future (working) carving out a career in let’s say manufacturing. If wen want and need more women in STEM we gotta , make sure we show the world and humanity that we do have some amazing women in STEM and they are doing very nice job and prove their (the girls who want to work in STEM sphere) parents that STEM is one of the most profitable sphere.
Generate excitement. Girls want to be creative and have a positive impact on the world. Many don’t realize that STEM and computer science careers can give them exactly the opportunities they’re looking for!

Provide hands-on experience. Girls who participate in STEM clubs and activities outside of school are more likely to say they will pursue STEM subjects later in their education. In addition to increasing access to STEM and CS clubs, we can bring the experiential learning that girls want into more classrooms.

Provide encouragement. Girls who feel supported by teachers and parents show more interest in continuing with STEM and CS learning in their future.
Encourage a “growth mindset.” Girls are willing to work hard to succeed. So we need to create environments where questions, discovery and even failure are treated as positive parts of the learning process.
