1 Bad habits 2 We all have habits, good or bad. Some of them are a bit strange: reading magazines back to front, for instance. Others can be annoying: like biting your nails or being always late. You are lucky if you have only good and healthy habits: jogging every morning or brushing your teeth after meals. Unfortunately many people have bad habits which mainly cause serious health problems. The most common habits are smoking, drinking alcohol and using drugs. They usually come out as a result of some stress, anger or boredom. Some teenagers start smoking because they believe that it’s cool. Bad habits are dangerous and expensive. What is more, for many people they are addictive. It means that it’ll be very hard to quit them once you have started. Cigarettes, alcohol and drugs can ruin someone’s life. For example, smoking damages lungs and causes cancer. By the way it is the number one killer in many countries today. About 90% of lung cancer patients developed their disease because of smoking. Chain smokers are also susceptible to heart diseases and strokes. Passive smoking is very harmful for surrounding people as well, especially for children and pregnant women. As for drinking alcohol, it can ruin your liver and kidney. Besides, very drunk people and drug addicts become aggressive and violent. They can easily commit a crime under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Drunk driving is the main reason for car accident 3 deaths in our world. Most bad habits have a great impact on people’s social life and their jobs. Breaking the bad habits is the hardest thing to do. So it’s better not to start or try them at all. Scientists and doctors state that the way you treat your body in the first half of your life will affect how healthy you are in the second half of it. I want to deal with harmful habits. This subject is burning and actual. 5 Now, as official reports admit, violence, AIDS, drugs and alcohol are more and more associated with youngsters. Some people care about health others-don’t: they have bad health habits. Everybody knows that harmful habits are dangerous for health and life but goes on smoking, drinking and taking drugs. I can name the first fatal habit: drinking alcohol. Alcohol is poison! It destroys the person’s brain, makes speech unclear. A great man said that drinking alcohol was a voluntary madness. Under the influence of alcohol the person can make absolutely rash actions. The recent surveys really show that alcohol cases are increasing. Teenagers experiment with alcohol for a variety of reasons. First, a lot of them associate drinking with adulthood. Curiosity can be one of the motives for teens’ first try of alcohol. Actually parents don’t pay much attention to what their children do and the most powerful influence on young people is their mates. 6 Many teens get upset or depressed when they can’t solve their problems. As a result, it makes them believe that there is only one way out-to stop living and commit suicide. I think there should be much more information about the danger of alcohol provided by mass media and schools. Teachers and parents can help a lot. Young people must have the feeling that somebody cares for them A lot of teenagers who have alcohol addiction almost never believe that they are dependent. Many young alcoholics are sent to special hospitals for the treatment but sometimes- without any success. It was said so much about the harm of smoking. Smoking also ruins our health. It makes our teeth yellow, our skin unhealthy, our hair and clothes smell. It is necessary to have the will - power to stop smoking. Nicotine is a dangerous poison. The person who has this habit can influence society and not in a good way. 7 Let’s imaging the person smokes near other people, he harms not just himself but the people breathing the smoke. Of course the government tries to do something for changing the situation: fixes the fines, an official warning « Smoking kills» is printed by law on all cigarette packets. Cigarette advertising is banned on television and radio. Many companies have banned smoking in their offices and canteens. In my opinion these two customs are not as harmful as using drugs.
