Shopping online is becoming increasingly popular with people living in cities and towns. While it is true that this development is likely to continue in the future, I believe that not all offline shops will close down as a result.
On the one hand, there are two main reasons why e-commerce will increase in the future. Firstly, products sold online are usually more affordable than those sold offline. As a result, many more people are expected to go online for shopping instead of physical shops. Secondly, more and more people/ a growing number of people are predicted to have access to high-speed Internet in urban areas. Research shows online shopping is likely to increase when more people are connected to the Internet. Therefore, online shopping will keep growing.
Having said that, there is always going to be a small demand for bricks-and-mortar stores for the following reasons. An obvious reason is that physical shops allow us to touch, smell, or try on items before we purchase them, whereas this is not the case with online shops. Another major reason is that it is possible for consumers to get their purchases immediately in physical shops, as opposed to Internet shops where they have to wait for days or weeks for their purchases to be delivered. Therefore, people living in cities will always have a need to go to high street shops.
In conclusion, with cheaper prices and more accessible internet, online shopping is likely to grow exponentially in future. Nevertheless, my view is that it will not necessarily replace all physical shops for such reasons as the ability to check purchases for quality and to obtain them immediately in these shops.
