Vowel classification

  • Vowels are pronounced with open approximation: allowing the airflow to exit unhindered.

  • Produced in a smaller area of the vocal tract [the palatal and velar regions]

  • Vowels are voiced

  • Vowels cannot be classified the same way as consonants

Additionally, vowels are also categorized by responding to three questions.
What is the tongue's height?
High-mid-low
Where on the tongue is this happening?
Front-central-back
What position do the lips have?
Whether rounded or not
Other elements Vowel length: The length of the vowel. Nasality: the velum's position (up or down). Whether or not the tongue stays in the same location differs between a monophthong and a diphthong. The articulation of vowels is limited by vowel gap. A consonant is pronounced if the tongue is raised above the highest point or pushed back farther than the vowel with the furthest back position.
1.3.Charecteristic features of vowels and exercises based on this theme.
Vowels
Vowel characteristics include the position of the lips (+/- round), the height of the tongue in the oral cavity (high, mid, low), the part of the tongue (front, central, back), the degree of tension in the tongue and lips (tense/lax), which is occasionally correlated with the position of the tongue's root (advanced tongue root - ATR) and (retracted tongue root - RTR), and the part of the tongue (front, central, back).
1. elevated: the tongue is pointed at the hard or soft palate.
2. low: the tongue is lowered to avoid contact with the hard or soft palate
3. the tongue's blade in front
4. back: the tongue's body or dorsum
Beyond the level of very basic descriptions, binary features are preferred to describe vowels, avoiding the terms "mid" and "central," except where specific languages require very detailed account.
Vowels are labeled as following:
high [+high]
front [-back] mid [-high, -low]
central and back [+back] low [+low]
A binary classification is also possible when there are more than two distinctions, one of which is more salient. Vowel height can be categorized by [-/+low] since high and low vowels are more common in most languages than mid. Thus high and mid are classified as [-low].
When describing a vowel, list the features in these orders.
