WOMAN (CONT'D)
If I’m not mistaken, with the girl from the night club, you know her.
CUT TO:
INT. CASINO LOUNGE. NIGHT.
Casino clerk (aged 70) is standing smartly in front of the Special Agent not far from two gambling halls.
I would like to talk to you when you are free.
CLERK
But it will be around 2 a.m.
SPECIAL AGENT
It's not late for me if you are still able to spare me half an hour.
Sure. It is about the case, I guess. But I spend all of my evenings here from eight till two in the morning.
SPECIAL AGENT
I know. I just want to have a chat with you. You will find me in the gambling hall, I want to sit peacefully tonight and watch the marble.
The Clerk cracks a smile.
CLERK
If it is so, then you will win.
Special Agent cracks a smile.
CUT TO:
INT. CASINO GAMBLING HALL. NIGHT.
Special Agent is sitting at the bar. The hall is full of people gambling. Marbles are rolling. Hands are pushing the chips. Tense faces of those who lose. Pleased faces of those who win. Attentive faces of croupiers. Dynamic croupiers' moves while giving commands to finish or start the game. Special Agent doesn't pay attention to the environment.

CLERK
You said you'll play.
SPECIAL AGENT
No, I said that I will be watching the marble. I can see them from here.
True. You see, from my experience I know that the marble is watched from a very close distance. You're not a typical gambler.
SPECIAL AGENT
So are you. Cause you always win. Tell me about your experience.
I have been here for forty years now. Some of the gamblers went old in my eyes. I know almost the whole city. I'm like a priest here. I conceal boring secrets. For example, do you see that gentleman?
A man (aged 70) is heading towards the roulette table.
Voice-over:
My former class mate Mr. Giacomo. One day he stopped greeting me when he saw that I am more prosperous with my casino clerk's salary than he with the earnings from his business because he leaves everything here. And that gentleman, Mr. Guillaume, over there comes here almost every night for many years.
There is a player (aged 70) at the roulette table.
Voice-over:

CLERK (CONT’D)
every night. He plays until he reaches this amount. If he's tired he bets the remaining amount, loses ten thousand and goes home. If he wins sometimes he bets again. Like at work. And that gentleman...
chips at the roulette table.
Voice-over:
He has his pictures taken leaning in front of expensive cars. I suspect he sends those pictures to young women.
A woman Clarice (aged 65) behind the roulette table.
This woman Madam Clarice is a widow; a few years ago her husband committed a suicide after he had lost a huge amount.
Special Agent.
Voice-over:
She always sits in the same place, were her husband was sitting the night he lost. Locals don't sit there. They say this seat courts disaster.
And this old man is one of my favorites.
He is pointing at the man, Martine (aged 75), with long grey hair, stylish grey suit and round glasses with a thick black frame and strong lenses.
CLERK (CONT’D) Here, I think he has just lost
three million, then smiles nicely to everybody and asks to excuse his leaving.
Several players are sitting at the corner table.
25.
Martine timidly stands up, bids a goodbye to his neighbors, nods to the croupier and the managers and walks slowly towards the exit with a smile in his face.
Voice-over:
CLERK (CONT’D)
I cannot tumble to him; it's harder to comprehend nice people than swindlers or crooks. He's so calm as if he comes here not to lose a few million but drops by after an evening walk. I like his bashfulness as if apologizing for disturbing us. I have no idea how much time is left for him to lose here. I always wish him a long life.
INT. CASINO GAMBLING HALL. NIGHT.
SPECIAL AGENT I find your remarks and
characterization very appealing Sir. You are talented storyteller.
the compliment.
CLERK
Well, I liked writing essays when I was at school. You see, I haven't been doing anything else for forty years. Day after day. And it's almost the same people. They have no idea that somebody is always watching them. They are very organic here. During the moments of zeal, passion. No one even thinks about it. Look here, please!
to one of the tables, looks closely at the gamblers. Turns around, walks among the tables attentively observing the gamblers. Finally he chooses a central table. Sits, watches other gamblers play. Croupier makes several gestures with his fingers.
Voice-over:
The croupier asked him if he is joining.
(MORE) 26.
CLERK (CONT’D)
All the croupiers, including me, can do some finger spelling. We show the sign patterns differently, in our own manner, but the meaning is clear.
Henry makes several gestures with his fingers.
CLERK (CONT’D)
I'll watch a bit, he says.
Special Agent observes curiously.
CLERK (CONT’D) Our deaf-and-dumb Henry is a
woodworker. He produces wooden items. There are people in Monaco who buy them instead of plastic items in the supermarket. I guess he comes here to communicate. He can't hear, can't talk, but he can see a lot, I guess.
Henry is pushing a yellow chip towards the black rectangle roulette table.
He only bets on the color.
Wise.
The marble stops on number 12. Croupier mimes and shows some sign patterns to Henry then he pushes a pile of chips towards him. Henry nods a “thank-you”. A man sitting sideways to Henry tells him something in words but Henry does not respond.
Voice-over:
CLERK
He doesn't stay longer than a two hours.
Like a length of the movie.

I can't say anything for sure at the moment. I would like to talk with the beggars of the city if there are any.
POLICE COMMISIONER
Why beggars?

Pleased to meat you, although I don't know why I deserved such an honor. After all, it's not every resident that you invite to talk with you.
SPECIAL AGENT
There is a reason. Tell me what you were doing in the evening of July the 6th ?
ANDRE
If I am not mistaken I was home. I was instructing my housekeeper.
INT. ANDRE’S HOME. EVENING.
Andre is screaming wildly at Miranda.
ANDRE
Your life here is too good; you don't deserve what you get. I'm sick of your delays, if I said you have to manage everything till six, so that is what you have to do.
Miranda is standing near her bed in a dressing closet and listening quietly.
