2.4 Problems with teaching reading in English classes
Reading is a critical type of communicative and cognitive activity for students. The goal of this activity is to extract information from a written fixed text. Reading serves several purposes, including practical mastery of a foreign language, learning a language and culture, information and educational activities, and self-education. Reading, as you know, helps to develop other types of communicative activity. Reading provides the most opportunities for schoolchildren's education and overall development through the use of a foreign language. When teaching reading at the beginning, it is critical to teach the student to read correctly, that is, to teach him to voice graphemes, extract thoughts, that is, to understand, evaluate, and apply the text's information. These abilities are largely determined by the child's reading speed. We mean not only the quick and accurate correlation of sound and letter, but also the correlation of the sound-letter bundle with the semantic meaning of what the child is reading. The high level of mastery of the reading technique enables you to achieve the result of the reading process itself - quick and high-quality information extraction. This, however, is not possible if the student lacks sufficient language skills, does not know how or reproduces sounds incorrectly. It is also important to instill a love of reading when teaching reading. When the content of the texts offered to students corresponds to their cognitive and emotional needs, as well as the level of their intellectual development, the need for reading in a foreign language will be met. Texts should be informative, varied in genre and subject matter, and this is an important factor in mastering this type of speech activity. Some strategies for overcoming reading difficulties in high school: - To successfully master the reading technique, phonetic exercises should be performed at each lesson (conduct exercises on sound-letter correspondences, learn small rhymes, rhymes for training complex sounds) - Сarry out training exercises with new words based on the material studied (read a new word by analogy with an already familiar one, read words with a particular sound, connect rhyming words, connect words with the corresponding sound or completely transcription). - Before reading a text, you should familiarize yourself with its vocabulary (in the form of training exercises, oral dialogue). - To teach oneself to read, based on internal speech processes and progressing through hidden articulation. - It is necessary to teach children to form forecasting mechanisms, guesses, and identification, as well as to analyze, find language supports in the text, and use a dictionary if necessary. -It is essential to teach reading techniques based on previously learned lexical and grammatical material. - Texts should be chosen based on the program for a specific period of study. - choose texts based on students' ages, speech patterns, and life experiences, as well as their interests. - Text volumes should not exceed the allowable number of words. To summarize, it is necessary to overcome many difficulties in the process of developing reading skills, the most important of which is teaching reading techniques. Reading technique refers to the ability to extract information from text as well as the ability to read quickly and correctly. The technique of reading in a foreign language should be taught using well-known lexical material that has already been learned orally. Thus, learning to read at the beginning should serve as a foundation for further study of the subject and assistance in learning to read at later stages [19]. Download 1.42 Mb.
