Lesson 1. Problem cause

Read the texts and fill in the gaps with appropriate ‘consequences’ from the box below.

Consider the development of a nuclear powerplant at an ocean site. The anticipated and intendedgoal or consequence is the production of electricpower. The undesired but common and expectedconsequence is the heating of the ocean water nearthe plant. An undesired and improbable consequence would be a major explosion.

Number of prohibiting laws of human actionslike selling alcohol drinks, birth, abortion also haveunintended results. In the history keeping domesticanimals was banned in cities, thinking of makingcities more modern and cultural and to increaseintelligence. People disposed them off after tax hadbeen set for keeping them. The modernization ideas ended with famine. Human stupidity led ladies to be disabled or even to deathas the results of running after beauty. Most modern technologies have negativeconsequences that are both unavoidableand unpredictable. For example, almost all environmental problems, from chemical pollution to global warming, are the unexpectedconsequences of the application of moderntechnologies. Invention of the automobiles resulted traffic congestion, deaths injuries from car accidents and air pollution.

One of the innovations - the Internet has alreadyhad an impact on a human life significantly. It changedthe ways in which we meet each other, the ways werun business, the ways we share information, andmany more. Still, all of this is surely only the smalltip of a huge iceberg, which seems very likely to change our lives in ways which we cannot today imagine.

We cannot beginto anticipate the consequences of this technology.Spam is also unintended consequence of thee-mail service. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi abilities are notdetected fully.

The other technology which has stirred thepublic imagination in this century is the cloning ofanimals, and the possibility that we may eventuallybe able to clone human beings. Who knows whatconsequences it may bring?

Another much desired technology is robot.People expect robots as their helpers or slaves andare going to have much happier life. If we lookat peoples’ dependency on computers today, it isdifficult to anticipate if robots will be slave to people or vice versa.
