The fact that mushrooms can accumulate metals from toxical aspect motivate us for this investigation, from
a point of establishing of the situation with the accumulation of toxic metals in the ecologicaly pure areas – high
mountanious places.
Acumaulation of toxic metals was analyzed in eleven mushroom species collected from different moun-
tanous regions of the Republic of Macedonia. Determination of the concentration of Pb, Cd, Zn and Cu was made
with the aid of atomic absorption spectrometry on the instrument Optima-QES 2000.
Results expressed on dry mass basis indicate that the content of Cu in the analysed mushroom samples ranged
from 0.081 mg/kg in Calocybe gambosa (Fr.) Donk to 0.7 mg/kg in Amanita caesarea (Scop.) Pers. mg/kg, with a
mean of 0.37 mg/kg. Zn values between 0.12 mg/kg in Lactarius deliciosus Fr. and 0.85 mg/kg in Auricularia auric-
ular-judae (Bull.:St.Anm.), were obtained. Obtained low concentrations of toxic metals Cu and Zn in the investigat-
ed samples indicated that this mushroom can be used as an additional supplement of these essential elements in
human nutrition.
Cd and Pb were found in 54 % of the investigated samples. The estimated Pb concentration ranged from
0.02 mg/kg in Tricholoma terreum (Schaeff.) Quel.to 0.08 mg/kg in Agaricus campester (L.)Fr.. In samples were Cd
was detected the concentrations were low and varied from 0.01 mg/kg in Amanita caesarea (Scop.) Pers. to 0.08
mg/kg in Boletus edulis Bull. In the samples where Cd and Pb were detected the average values were lower than the
maximum concentrations imposed by regulations.
All of the investigated toxic metals are present in extremely low concentrations in the investigated mush-
rooms samples. This proved the ecological purity of the regions where the mushrooms were collected.

The essential oils from three species of genus Micromeria Bentham (fam. Lamiaceae) growing wild in
Bulgaria (M. dalmatica and M. cristata) and Macedonia (M. cristata and M. juliana) have been analyzed and dis-
cussed in context with the results obtained for the corresponding Micromeria essential oils from the region. The
obtained essential oils were analyzed by GC-MS and components were identified according to their mass spectra
and linear retention indices.
M. dalmatica was characterized by high quantities of essential oil and oxygenated monoterpenes with p-
menthane skeleton were the main constituents. The two samples of M. cristata from Bulgaria showed significant dif-
ferences in their chemical composition (monoterpenic alcohols prevailed in the sample from Bosnek, whereas
sesquiterpenes dominated in the oil from plants of the Ilindentsi population). Very similar content of total monoter-
penes, oxygenated monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes was found in the essential oil of M. cristata from Alshar,
Macedonia, and from Ilindentsi, Bulgaria, However, these two samples differed substantially in the variety of iden-
tified sesquiterpene compounds (20 compared to 5 and 4 in the other M. cristata oil samples). High content of
sesquiterpenes was also found in the essential oil of M. juliana from Macedonia with the distribution pattern in accor-
dance with the data found for other samples of M. juliana from the region.

Pharmacy from XIII to XVI century
Skrbo A., Sober M., Marjanovic A., Djedjibegovic J.
Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Sarajevo, Cekalusa 90, Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina
For the renaissance of clasicall medicine and pharmacy most responsible are Arabs, Persians, Syrians and Jews.
Great campaign of Arabs begun in 7
th
century. They seized whole Midlle East, Persia, Egypt, and afterwards Spain,
India, Constantinople, Balkan and Hungary all over to Wienna. Arabian doctors and pharmacists, in the period from
VIII to XVI century, had important role in development of pharmacy: They have opened first pharmacies in Europe.
The very first pharmacy was opened in Salerno, than in Cordoba and Seville and afterwards in other european cities.
In Salern’s edict that was brought in 1240. medicine and pharmacy were formaly divided, but pharmacists
and doctors stayed in specific interrelation for centuries. In Europe, first pharmacies and laws about them exsisted
in Venice in 1258. and Florence in 1300. They were opened pattern to arabian pharmacies, first pharmacies with not
only commercial but also with scientific attribute, because first pharmacists were chemists, astrologists, magicians
and merchants.
A great progress has been made in pharmacy during XVI century. Major role in that progress had Paracelsus
(1493-1541). He pioneered the use of chemicals and minerals in medicine. He was the most notable leader of iatro-
chemistry, that had great influence on medical treatment. Pharmacy at Balkan peninsula arose in late XIII century.
It was under great influence of western medicine at that time, that was reached from Republic of Dubrovnik and oth-
ers cities by the Adriatic coast. During the period of independent Bosnian state mostly traditional medicine and phar-
macy were present. Many barbers were practicing pharmacy, preparing and selling drugs, mostly balsams. Traditional
medicine founded explanation for causes of various illnesses in ocult world of demons, so one of the ways to cure
was divination.
After collapse of independent Bosnian state at the end of XV century, domination of Ottoman Empire begun.
Influence of the East was evident especially in medicine. Ottomans brought rich threasury of Arabian medicine and
pharmacy to Bosnia, with all its prescriptions and literature. Unfortunatelly, it did not improve public health since
almost anyone could practice medicine and pharmacy.

„ATTARI“ and „LJEKARUSE“ – their contribution
to development of pharmacy
Skrbo A., Sober M., Marjanovic A., Djedjibegovic J.
Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Sarajevo, Cekalusa 90, Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina
In XVI century in Bosnia and Herzegovina first attar's shops were set up and people who were opened them
were called „attari“. The word „attar' is Arabian-Turkish origin, and the first meaning of this word was „area around
settlements that was used by the field warders“, but the most common meaning is „the man that sells herbs and drugs“.
The term „attar“ can also be related to arabian word „itr“ which mean spice. First attars were Jews, Jermenians and
Muslims. The first Jewish attar's shops were opened at Bascarsija in 1565, where herbs, spices, etheric oils and drugs
were sold. All data about drugs from this period gives Materia medica of attar's age, lists of inventory, papers so called
„ljekarusse“ etc. From the lists of drugs that were found in these shops not only the influence from East and West but
also the influence of alchemists and iatrochemists from that age can be seen. Educated people from that age, and after-
wards attars were translating and transcripting old medical books, recording their recipes with translations and in that
manner “jekaruse“ were made. By their origin and languages on which they were written ljekaruse can be divided on
Muslim, Jewish, Serbian and Croatian (Franciscan). They were written in Latin, ladino-Hebrew, Italian, Turkish and
Arabian. In Sarajevo first attars were Jewish. Most important documents from that period are two manuscripts that
were so far in the possession of Jewish municipality. These manuscripts comprise recipes for drugs and medical prepa-
rations, elements of spiritual rituals and romances that were written in Spanish-Hebrew language called „rashi“.
„Ljekaruse“ that were written in Serbian origin from the monks and orthodox priests. These manuscripts contain recipes
from Byzantine Greek and Arabian medicine with elements of spiritual rituals. Most of the manuscripts in Croatian
were written by Bosnian Franciscans and are mostly remained in friaries.
Attars and their manuscripts-“ljekaruse“ had great influence on development of medicine and pharmacy in
Bosnia and Herzegovina, especially on establishment of herbal shops and pharmacies.
