Analyze the semantic changes in the following words, and the phonetic features that betray their origin:. cavalry chivalry cavalry (Norm. Fr.) — chivalry (Par. Fr.) These words were borrowed from the same language twice, but in different periods corps corpse corpse [kɔ:ps] (Norman borrowing) (труп) – corps [kɔ:] (Parisian borrowing) (корпус, войсковой соединение) These words were borrowed from the same language twice, but in different periods hotel hospital Hospital and hostel are direct borrowings of French words formed from hospitale, whereas hotel was influenced by French hostel. Hotel-Parisian French, hospital- Latin liquor – liqueur Borrowed – borrowed element. This group presents words borrowed from the same language twice but in different periods Liquor (liquid) – liqueur (drink) French language skirt – shirt The words shirt and skirt etymologically descend from the same root. Shirt is a native word, and skirt is a Scandinavian borrowing. Their phonemic shape is different, but there is a certain resemblance which reflects their common origin.
