Learner Profiles: Learner 1: to make study cards, to make up sentences using new words, to use newly learnt words in speech, to use memory techniques
Learner Profiles: Learner 2: to use a dictionary to find correct spelling, to pay attention to spelling while reading, to remember words in bits and pieces, to use memory techniques
Learner Profiles: Learner 3: to use an electronic dictionary, to talk to native speakers, to watch BBC News in the Learning Centre, to participate in the Conversation Club, Readers’ Club and other Learning Centre activities.




  •  (5 min) When they finish ask participants to share their suggestions in a bigger group and invite other learners to contribute to the original list.

  •  (5 min) Based on the strategies offered by learners, ask such questions as “Have you ever had such problems?”, “Have you used any strategies to solve the problem?” and “Which strategies would you like to use in future?” Encourage them to share their strategies to learn from each other.

  •  (5 min) Summarise the session by emphasising that to be an effective language learner, they need to use various learning strategies and develop their own best way of learning a language.

Refer participants to the ELA Guide. Say that depending on their needs they can find different sections in it and learn more about various strategies, for example if they would like to enlarge their vocabulary they might be interested in such sections as ‘Memory Improving Techniques’ or ‘Building Your Vocabulary’.
