HOLIDAYS IN GREAT BRITAIN. Like all the people of the world the British people also have many holidays. The most traditional of them are: Christmas, the New Year, St.Valentine’s Day, April Fool’s Day, Halloween and others. Christmas is a religious holiday. It is celebrated on December 25 as the birthday of Christ who is the Prophet of Christians. Traditionally the British people decorate their trees on Christmas Eve – that’s December 24 th . They take down the decorations twelve days later, on Twelfth night (January 5 th ). An older tradition is Christmas mistletoe. People put a piece of this green plant with its white berries over a door. Mistletoe brings good luck, people say. Also, at Christmas British people kiss their friends and family under the mistletoe. In Great Britain the New Year is not so widely celebrated as Christmas. The most common type of celebration is a New Year party. When the clock strikes twelve everyone wishes everyone else “A Happy New Year”. Then toasts, kisses, handshakes and usually “Auld Lang Syne” is sung. The rest of the night is spent in eating, drinking, singing and dancing. After midnight many people visit friends and neighbours. February 14 th is St. Valentine’s Day. St.Valentine is the saint of people in love. On that day people in love send a Valentine’s card or present to a person whom they are in love with or to somebody they admire. But traditionally they must never write their name on it. Some British newspapers have a page for St.Valentine’s Day messages on February 14 th . It is interesting to note that some young people look forward to Valentine’s Day hoping to receive many cards. April 1 st is April Fool’s Day in Great Britain. They say that this very old tradition dates from the Middle Ages when the servants were masters for one day of the year. They gave orders to their masters and their masters had to obey. But now April Fool’s Day is different. The first day of April is a Day when people hoax their friends with jokes like sending them to the teacher’s room to take something special if they are pupils or telling them to dig a hole because the dog
has died; when they come back and ask where the dead dog is they say “April Fool” and laugh at them. The last night of October was when people in pre-Christmas Britain celebrated the beginning of their New Year. They believed that on that night the spirits or ghosts of dead people returned to frighten the living. A long time ago people were afraid and stayed at home on Halloween. But now in Britain it’s a day for fun and parties. Some people wear masks, others dress as ghosts and witches. Some children make special Halloween lantern from a large pumpkin. First, they take out the middle of the pumpkin. Then they cut holes for the eyes, nose and mouth. After that they put a candle inside the pumpkin. Finally, they light the candle. In a dark the lantern looks like the face of a ghost. Everybody is happy. At the parties both adults and children have fun, they play different merry games. Download 381.99 Kb.
