The natural beauty, gorgeous geography, and vibrant energy make Orlando a truly unique location for this year’s World Congress meeting. I encourage you to take full advantage of all that Orlando has to offer. There is always something to do here. Orlando offers a range of art and culture, from modern to traditional, and a mix of old-style and contemporary entertainment for all visitors. This year’s meet- ing theme, “Fostering Environmental Science for an Ever-Changing World,” is an affirmation of who we are, what we’ve achieved, and what we aspire to accomplish through SETAC’s mission to enhance Environmental Quality Through Science®. An outstanding selection of leading-edge science will be presented at our signa- ture plenary and scientific sessions, including Nancy Denslow, Professor University of Florida and this year’s SETAC Founder’s Award winner; Daniel Fagin, an environmental journalist from New York University; John Moran, a well-known nature photographer; and David Schindler, Killam Memorial Chair and Professor of Ecology University of Alberta who is the 2016 SETAC Rachael Carson Award recipient. Many innovative and new features and technology have been added to this year’s meeting. These include enhancements to our Orlando meeting app, interactive public outreach through a Reddit Ask Me Anything, and on-going social network- ing opportunities through Facebook, Twitter, and the SETAC LinkedIn group. This combined SETAC World Congress and North America Annual Meeting has brought together more than 2,400 of your colleagues and peers from over 40 countries to share their science and exchange information and ideas that will help develop and find solutions to some of the most challenging environmental problems. The theme of the meeting, “Fostering Environmental Science for an Ever-Changing World,” captures the challenge we all face with keeping science on pace with the ever-changing demands of old and new stresses on the environment. With changing social and political challenges, we need to develop and find the best science-based solutions possible to achieve Environmental Quality Through Science ® . The host city, Orlando, is a fabulous place to hold a conference, with lots of sunshine and typical November temperatures between 78 ºF (26 ºC) during the day and 59 ºF (15 ºC) at night. The site of the World Congress is the beautiful Rosen Shingle Creek Hotel and Convention Center, a spectacular Spanish-style resort and conference venue with lots of restaurants, bars, shops and recreational opportunities. The 230-acre property is adorned with pine trees and dense oaks along the historic Shingle Creek, a part of the Everglades headwaters. And while you are walking around the Rosen Shingle Creek, keep an eye out for Mr. Harris Rosen, founder and owner of the Rosen Hotels and Resorts. His com- mitment to hospitality is legendary, and he often walks through his hotel greeting visitors and guests, making sure the hotel is meeting their expectations. But more importantly, I encourage you to visit www.rosenshinglecreek.com and view the videos on the philanthropic efforts of Mr. Rosen. This is a man who started from humble beginnings and has risen to great heights through hard work but also a sense of gratitude and humbleness for all his success. He gives back to the community in ways that make a dif- ference in the lives of everyday people. He is truly an exceptional man that gives as he has received, and he exemplifies principles that we share in SETAC, give back and work hard to make the world a better place. The Orlando Program Committee, with input from the SETAC and SETAC North America Science Committees, has developed a diverse program to meet the different scientific interests of all of our attendees. This year, we are trying an approach called spotlight sessions, 16 sessions that the Program Committee felt might be of particular interest, such as Everglades and wetlands science, Canadian Oil Sands, plastic debris, climate change and water resource management. For those that want to learn a little more about SETAC, three spotlight sessions highlight the society’s development, including our early beginnings, an update on the Berlin sustainability declaration and the Global Horizon Scanning Research Project. With 96 platform sessions and close to 1,500 posters, there is a lot of science on tap! In addition to the strong technical program, we have four exceptional plenary speakers, who will present a diverse range of topics to both entertain and enlighten our conference attendees. The social program is where society bonds and lifelong friendships are truly forged. Numerous networking events are scheduled to allow new attendees to interact with more “seasoned” members of the society and to provide forums where early to mid-career professionals can develop their connections. For students, there is a jam-packed week of networking events and opportunities. Some highlights include the Reddit Ask Me Anything event and the Student/Mentor Dinner on Monday and the Student Mixer on Wednesday. The Women in SETAC Luncheon speaker on Tuesday is former U.S. House of Representatives member Patricia Schroeder addressing the work–life balance. It will be easy to break the ice and share a laugh at the Tuesday Night Social at Kings Orlando, where you can interact with fellow conference attendees all while enjoying fun games, dessert and great com- pany. On Thursday, don’t miss out on the closing ceremonies and your chance to win an inflatable paddle board or a bike from Salem Cycle. We want to thank all of our generous supporters for their contribu- tions, including SETAC Global Partners and Affiliates and SETAC North America Sustaining Members and Affiliates, and all meeting supporters and individual donations large and small, which all add up to make this meeting a success. We want to highlight the hard work and support of the SETAC staff. SETAC meetings run seamlessly to most of our members because the staff makes sure everything goes smoothly, even if they have to spend inordinate hours making it so. Our staff is world class and there are none better anywhere! Tours will depart and return from the Transportation Lobby at the Rosen Shingle Creek Hotel. SUNDAY Birdwatching at Lake Apopka 7:30 a.m.–1:00 p.m. | $50 Join the Orange Audubon Society to explore the 20,000-acre Lake Apopka North Shore, a state property which was originally popular with anglers but was converted for shallow marsh farming in the 1940s and 1950s. The lake was later reclaimed from farmers to restore water quality. The newly opened Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive traverses berms through the restored wetlands, and more than 360 bird species have been sighted. Regularly seen in November are Sora, Purple Gallinule, Limpkin, Wood Stork, American Bittern, Sandhill Crane, Wood Duck, Mottled Duck and Black-bellied and Fulvous Whistling-Duck, along with most of North America’s wading bird species. With such a large restoration area on the shore of Florida’s 4th largest lake, rarities frequently show up. Several experienced birders with spotting scopes will accompany the group. MONDAY Everglades Airboat Tour on Cypress Lake 2:00 p.m.–6:30 p.m. | $120 Enjoy a closer look at birds, alligators and exotic wildlife as you glide through 4,200 acres of untouched nature preserve on an exclusive airboat ride. The swamp is free of any development and is 100% pure Florida wilderness. After your hour-long ride, you can have your picture taken while holding a baby alligator and explore the park.
