PART 3: METHODOLOGY (800 WORDS)
This should be a detailed chapter giving the reader sufficient information to make an estimate of the
reliability and validity of your methods.
Methodological approach and research process
Here the research should define the methodological approach whether is quantitative or qualitative.
Describe the design and justify the selection of the method and give a brief explanation of why the best
alternative to was answer the research questions. The student should describe the stages that follow to
conduct the actual research.
Research setting
The research should describe here the context in which the research was conducted. This implies the
geographical context, the time frame in which the analysis was done and justify why this setting is suitable
for the research.
✔ What was the research setting?
✔ Why did you choose that particular setting?
✔ When was the research carried out?
Data Collection
Population and sampling Method. The student should describe the subject of the research, why it was
selected as mean for the observation. Define the population and how the sampling was defined and in
case of qualitative, how the cases were selected.
✔ What were the characteristics of the interviewers and observers, and how were they trained?
✔ What instructions were given to participants?
✔ How many?
✔ How were they selected?
✔ What were their characteristics?
✔ How were refusals/non-returns handled?
Operationalization of the variables. The student should describe the variables and the categories
depending on the type of research and indicate the measures and the way these variables and categories
will reflect the reality the student wants to observe. The student should rely on previous research and
justify the selection.
