Episode 2
(4) Pretending Nothing Happened The first thing that Wonbin did after removing his tight cast and being able to walk as before was to visit his parents. To show them that he is doing well and to show them a healthy smile. Since they were not aware of Wonbin’s feelings, all the family members were busy exchanging their daily stories in front of Wonbin with a casual face. They were talking about entertainment TV programs, recently released entertainment movies, and how cute is the tail of the baby of their neighbor’s dog who gave birth. “Oh yeah, Sohee registered for a music academy after earning pocket money from a part time job. Sohee’s mom was so worried that he wouldn’t think about studying anymore.” Wonbin’s mom said while smiling. “A music academy?” “Yes, Sohee was a little bit off-the-shelf since he was young. Even him said that he was going to follow you to become a runner too…” His mom quickly changed the topic while she was talking. “Did you eat all side dishes that I gave you last time? You have to eat well, I heard that rehabilitation is not usually hard. By the way, your grandmother sent me some apples take some.” Translated by: RIIZE_SUBS (@naueitaro, @mimitadiary, @justchanyoung) His mom got up from her seat and rummaged through the vegetable compartment of the refrigerator and began to pick up vegetables, fruits and others. “With Sohee…I don’t think I was able to contact him since I started the track and field training. Did we run into each other once or twice at school? I’ll try to call him.” Wonbin said and added the story of the track and field team, softening the atmosphere. Everyone who tries not to be anything feels more random so Wonbin even imagined turning into an invisible man. After dinner with his family after a long time, Wonbin prepared to go back home (where he was staying, away from his family). "I'm going to take you there. You have a lot of stuff. You know you shouldn't overdo it." “No, it won’t take long by bus.” Won Bin added refusing his mom to send him off. “I’m really fine mom. Don’t worry, okay?” As soon as Wonbin smiled, his mom then nodded and stepped back. She also told him to put the side dishes in the refrigerator right away and to be careful not to cut his hands when peeling the fruits, and to come home whenever he wanted to. Wonbin nodded his head bravely. The first thing Wonbin did after returning home was to deal his mother's side dishes that was brought the last time. Translated by: RIIZE_SUBS (@naueitaro, @mimitadiary, @justchanyoung) He felt guilty emptying out all of the spoiled food without even touching it, but it was better than worrying about it. From now on, he made a promise to eat well and pile up the new side dishes he received in the empty refrigerator ‘Sohee went to a music academy?’ Sohee's recent status which suddenly came to his mind and Sohee who had been chasing him since from a young age overlapped causing a smirk. I think we were pretty close until middle school… But after he was selected as an athlete and got busy with his training, him and Sohee became estranged. Sohee also went to the same high school as Wonbin, but the school year schedules were different, so the number of times that they ran into each other could just be counted by hand. - Son, stay healthy always. I love you ❤ Wonbin smiled at his mom’s message attached to the bottom box. She fixed it with a magnet in a well-visible spot in front of the refrigerator door and took out the box. The paper box, which was about the size of a pair of running shoes, was full of bear characters that Wonbin likes. What’s in it? Wonbin shook it lightly for no reason. There was a sound of things inside hitting each other. Wonbin sat on the sofa and opened the box. Translated by: RIIZE_SUBS (@naueitaro, @mimitadiary, @justchanyoung) It contained two small notebooks, a package of photos stacked in sheets and letters exchanged with friends. Wonbin turned the photos over one by one. The photos were from when he was in kindergarten to when he was in elementary school and were organized in chronological order. Seeing the photo of him blowing hard at the cake with five candles, he burst into laughter without realizing it. It was funny to see his inflated face with air pumped into his cheeks, but it was also because he recognized the little boy crying next to him with a square mouth, it was Sohee. Just when he was about to be touched at his childhood, something fell suddenly. It was a ‘Certificate of Merit’ with a clear glue mark on the edge made with several thick sheets of paper. Ah, this. The palm-sized certificate was filled with the crooked handwriting of Sohee. - Award. This award is given to Wonbin hyung, who is the coolest. I’ll become a cool person like you too, from Sohee. How is Sohee doing? He became curious about Sohee’s safety. However, since Sohee is the one who remembers his brightest and most promising days, he had no choice but to hesitate for a while. Still, it’s Sohee. - Sohee, how are you? The 1 in front of the speech bubble immediately disappeared (indicating that it was read already). Translated by: RIIZE_SUBS (@naueitaro, @mimitadiary, @justchanyoung) Wonbin waited for Sohee’s reply with a bit of nervousness. However, even after several minutes, he did not receive a reply from Sohee. It’s lighter than betrayal, but it’s heavier and painful than being sad. He didn’t know how to explain this unknown feeling. Wonbin couldn’t fall asleep until late night. From the present to the past, from the further past to the near future. Random thoughts were interfering his sleep, but Wonbin blamed it on the moonlight pouring through the empty window. He ordered curtains that he had been putting off for months now because he was feeling lazy. A few days later, the curtains were hung on the windows. It was a blackout curtain made of thick material that could not let even a single ray of light in. When all the lights were turned off, the room was in deep darkness even in the middle of the day. Only the occasional flickering red light of the fire alarm system seemed to signal that someone was here. Wonbin put the box in the deepest part of the drawer. He hid all the scenes of the past that made him confident, including memories with Sohee, under a deeper darkness.
