What I wanted to achieve
I wanted to achieve the learning outcome of the particular class which included making students
able to identify Present Perfect and Simple Past Tense, understand the difference between
Present Perfect and Simple Past Tense and use of them in their real life.
What I thought was successful
I wanted to teach Present Perfect and Simple Past Tense, their difference and their usage. I
executed two activities in the class excluding warm up. One of them was pair work and the
other was individual work. All the students answered and responded to all the questions and
exercises spontaneously and correctly while working in pairs. Even same thing happened in
warm up session. Most of them responded to the exercises correctly while working individually.
These are the evidences that all the activities went smoothly and successfully.
What I feel was not so successful and how I would alter it when teaching similar things
Since I was the first to conduct the class, I had to set the topic related scene in warm up session
apart from exchanging greetings and imparting lesson. It is very difficult to set topic related
scene for declaring topic especially in a grammar class. Being the very first session, students
remained quite silent at the very beginning. I was surprised at this. Even I think my supervisor,
Dr Sayeedur Rahman, was also surprised. Although it was difficult, I wanted to bring out the
topic from the students’ utterances and became successful. I was careful about it in the next
sessions and when teaching similar things, I would give attention on the timing of the warm up
session.
Conclusion
To sum up, I would like to say that although this was my first teaching experience in BRAC
Institute of Language (BIL), it was one of the successful classes. I taught in different institutions
before. Nevertheless, I was startled seeing my students quite silent. But after the class I was
happy to conduct a successful class. I learnt many things from my first microteaching with the
elementary students.
