Mikhail Lermontov

Mikhail Lermontov at his desk
Mikhail Yurievich was a very observant person from early childhood. Now a fascinating picture unfolds before his eyes, he observes the life and customs of the St. Petersburg aristocracy. Based on these observations, he will write the drama "Masquerade", but during the life of the poet this work was never published. Despite repeated revisions of the material, Lermontov was unable to break through the obstacles of censorship.
Critics call 1837 the turning point from early creativity to mature. It was at this time that the poem "The Death of a Poet" appeared, a real requiem for the murdered Pushkin. These angry lines condemned the murderer and the court nobility, who persecuted the great poet. The poem literally split Russia into two unequal halves. Pushkin's friends and admirers of his talent greeted the bold work enthusiastically, while his secret and open enemies furiously scolded Lermontov for his daring challenge.
LINKS
The trial and arrest of Lermontov became inevitable. Nicholas was the first to closely follow the process. The intervention of the influential Arsenyeva and Pushkin's friends made it possible to mitigate the punishment of the impudent poet. He was sent to serve in a dragoon regiment stationed in the Caucasus.
Mikhail Lermontov in exile
The first link lasted six months. During this time, youthful gaiety gave way to black melancholy. After returning to the northern capital, the poet experiences heightened attention from representatives of high society. They are admired or openly hated. Staying in the Caucasus inspired Lermontov to create new works. He writes "Demon" and "Mtsyri".
In exile, the poet also did not waste time, he brought new works, they are published in the Notes of the Fatherland. He is at the peak of popularity, communicates with close friends of Pushkin. His behavior in society has not changed, he is still brash and sarcastic. In 1840, Lermontov quarreled with the son of the French ambassador de Barante, a verbal skirmish ended in a duel. After the duel, the poet is sent to the Caucasus. He gets to the front line, bravely fights with opponents, but by order of the emperor he does not receive a reward.
Two months before his death, the poet wrote a wonderful poem "I go out alone on the road." Many contemporaries believe that he had a premonition of his death, and in this poem Lermontov spoke directly about his disappointment and unwillingness to live.
PROSE
When the poet studied at the school of ensigns, he found time to work on the novel Vadim. In this work, Lermontov refers to historical events, to the Pugachev uprising.
The main prose work of Lermontov is the novel "A Hero of Our Time". Pechorin's nature is deep and contradictory, just like his author, who knows how to deeply feel, subtly understand people and events, and hurt those whom he considered his enemies.
