Literature review
The ''Divergent'' is an interesting fantasy novel. This novel is very interesting to read and to research. The bestseller book is conducted by students around the world and by some writers like Jackie Lea Sommers.
The first study about the ''Divergent'' is made by Arlita¹ (Surakarta University ) under the title ''A translation analysis on verb phrase in Divergent novel by Veronica Roth ''.In this reserch Arlita analyzed English verb phrases and accuracy translation of english verb phrase found in Divergent novel.
The second research was made by Dani Aprianto² under the title of ''The analysis of Genocide in ''Divergent''novel by Veronica Roth''.In this research he analyzed the aspects if Genocide and familes cause in Genocide.The researcher uses Benjamin A Valentino's theory to analyze his work.
The third research entitled "Prevention of genocide under International law" which was done by Ruvebana³ from University of Groningen in Kahele, Congo. In this research, she provides An analysis of the obligations of States and the United Nations to prevent genocide at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels. Her method on this research is prevention method of genocide. She analyzed the discrimination, genocide perspective and genocide in law. The researcher uses Raphael Lemkin' theory to analyze this research .
An American writer Jackie Lea Sommers noted her impression after finishing to read ''Divergent''.
''I loved this work! Veronica did an amazing job. What I'm saying is that she made me fall in love with her characters. I value characters relationships and ideas more than word building, action and adventure'' says Lea Sommers.
The most important thing in this book characters themselves, the relationships between characters, ideas that helps you to process and gives motivation.
Analysis and Discussion
Character-is person , animal or thing in a story. Writers uses the characters in order to perform actions or speak dialogues .There are 6 main character types in literature. Antoganist, pratoganist, flat character, dynamic character, static character, and round character. Sometimes literary characters may embody more than one of these character types Beatrice Prior from ''Divergent''is the best example for this kind of literary charachter.
The Divergent novel begins with a girl named Beatrice Prior 16 year old Protagonist.She was born in Abnegation family .Members of Abnegation should help to others except themselves. Beatrice always feels that she does not fit to abnegation faction. Because she never helped to others by heart. After her 16s birthday she decided to change her faction from Abnegation to Dauntless. After this event her adventure starts.
Beatrice (Tris)is main Protagonist of Divergent book.Tris is not only Protagonist but Dynamic and Round character as well.
''I have never slept in the same room as a boy before, but here I have no other option, unless I want to sleep in the hallway.''
''Heat swells behind my eyes as I think of home, and when I blink, a tear slips out. I cover my mouth to stifle a sob.''
''I am the weakest one here.''⁴
These speeches are spoken by Tris at the beginning of the novel .By this words writer describes protaganist as the weak and shy girl .But throughout the novel her mood and emotions always change.
''I am selfish,I am brave.''
From this example reader can see how protaganist developed and changed her emotions throughout the events. For this reason she might be an example for for round character.
Tris is dynamic character as well.Because at the beginning of the novel she tries to hide that she is divergent and she do not know why she is different than others .But at the end of the novel she realize the advantages of being divergent and says about it firmly and with confidence.
''I feel like someone breathed new air intoy lungs ,I am not Abnegation, I am not dauntless. I am Divergent.''⁵
Tori is one of the member of Dauntless faction. She administers Tris aptitude test and firs discovers that Tris is Divergent. The writer describes Tori as a static character. Because when she knows about the Tris's secret she helps her to stay safe and continues to provide with advices and never changes her mind. The readers can uderstand it fom following example.
''Beatrice, under no circumstances should you share that information with anyone. This is very important ... This is different. I don’t mean you shouldn’t share them now; I mean you should never share them with anyone, ever, no matter what happens. Divergence is extremely dangerous. You understand?”
''Believe in your self''.⁶
Writer embodied several antoganists in her novel like Peter Hayes,Jeanine Matthews and Eric.
