Suggestions for Sustained Writing
11) Think of an event in your youth that still has great significance for you. In what ways does
this significance extend to other people? What do you realize about the experience now that
you could not have known as a child? How has it affected your present actions? In a first draft,
just describe the event as thoroughly as possible; then, considering your readers‘ interests and
the overall message you want to convey, prune the description of the event so that only the most
important details remain, and retell the story. When you revise, continually ask yourself how the
story suits your purpose.
12) Try to answer any of the rhetorical questions Schreiner asks in her assay. Take any one (or
more) of the questions and consider it as a straightforward question. How would you answer it?
