Teaching vocabulary by drilling, spelling, and active involvement
Drilling is used to help students become familiar with the word form, particularly how it sounds. Drilling should be clear and natural to help learners become more familiar with the word [Thorbury, S. 2002]. Drilling is essential because learners must repeat the word to themselves as they learn it in order to retain it from memory. The most common method of spelling is to memorize words. Because the spelling forms of English words are not always deduced from their pronunciation, word spelling must be examined. The teacher uses this strategy to urge students to use elicitation to figure out what a term means. Elicitation increases learners' speaking possibilities while also allowing them to assess their understanding. This technique also includes personalization, which is using the word by learners in a context or sentence that is related to their life. Teaching vocabulary using Objects This technique can help learners in remembering vocabulary better, because memory for objects and pictures is very reliable and visual techniques can act as cues for remembering words. Using this technique includes the use of visual aids, and demonstration. In addition, Gairns & Redman state that real objects technique is appropriately employed for beginners or young learners and when presenting concrete vocabulary. Objects can be used to show meanings when the vocabulary consist of concrete nouns. Introducing a new word by showing the real object often helps learners to memorize the word through visualization. Objects in the classroom or things brought to the classroom can be used.3 Teaching vocabulary using drawing and picture For teachers of all levels, pictures are a valuable resource, but for those who are just getting started, they are crucial. Even verbs and basic grammar principles may be presented through graphics in a way that is both clear and engaging for your students. They're essential for teaching vocabulary because students at this level frequently don't have a strong enough understanding of the fundamentals to handle contextual examples. Confusion or a lack of understanding might result in annoyance or, worse, translation into the student's home tongue. Objects can be sketched on the chalkboard or on flash cards. They can assist young students in quickly comprehending and remembering what they have learnt in the classroom. They're great for clarifying the meaning of unfamiliar terms. They ought to be used as frequently as feasible. Posters, flashcards, wall charts, magazine pictures, board drawings, stick figures, and photographs are among the images. Images for vocabulary instruction can be found in a variety of places. They are sets of colorful graphics intended for schools, apart from those drawn by the teacher or students. Images taken from newspapers and magazines are also quite handy. Many readers, vocabulary books, and course books now include a large number of appealing illustrations that explain the meaning of basic words. The teacher can use school-provided learning materials.
