Conclusion on chapter I
Mr. Pickwick’s behavior in «The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club» is
a significant aspect of the novel. Mr. Pickwick is portrayed as a kind and generous
person, but his innocence and naivety sometimes lead to unintended consequences.
His behavior towards Mrs. Bardell, for example, leads to a lawsuit against him.
However, his behavior also highlights the importance of kindness and compassion
towards others. Mr. Pickwick’s friends, despite their different personalities, also
demonstrate loyalty and support towards him, emphasizing the importance of
friendship. Overall, Mr. Pickwick’s behavior is a reflection of his character and
values, and it serves as a reminder to readers of the importance of ethical behavior
and good intentions. Additionally, Mr. Pickwick’s behavior also reveals his
character development throughout the novel. At the beginning of the story, he is
portrayed as an idealistic and naive gentleman who believes in the inherent goodness
of people. However, as the story progresses, he becomes more aware of the darker
side of human nature, and his behavior becomes more cautious and guarded. This
character development emphasizes the importance of personal growth and self-
awareness in one’s behavior. Furthermore, Mr. Pickwick’s behavior also serves as a
commentary on English society at the time. The novel was written during the early
Victorian era, a time of great social and economic change. Mr. Pickwick’s behavior
and values stand in contrast to the values of the rising middle class, who were more
concerned with material success and social status. Through Mr. Pickwick’s behavior,
Dickens highlights the importance of moral values and personal integrity in a rapidly
changing society.
In summary, Mr. Pickwick’s behavior in «The Posthumous Papers of the
Pickwick Club» is a complex and multifaceted aspect of the novel. It reveals his
character development, serves as a commentary on English society at the time, and
emphasizes the importance of personal growth and moral values.
