INTRОDUCTIОN
English has become a global language that is used in almost every aspect of
life, including business, education, and technology. English education in Uzbekistan
began in the 1930s when the country was part of the Soviet Union. At that time, it
was taught as a foreign language in universities and specialized schools. However,
after Uzbekistan gained independence in 1991, the country started to reform its
education system, and English became a compulsory subject in secondary schools.
In 1995, the government implemented the «State Program for the Study and
Teaching of Foreign Languages», which aimed to improve the teaching and learning
of English in Uzbekistan. Since then, English has been taught as a core subject in
most schools, and the number of English language learners has increased
significantly.
Despite these efforts, the level of English proficiency in Uzbekistan is
still relatively low compared to other countries. According to the English
Proficiency Index2020, Uzbekistan ranked 70th out of 100 countries, with a
proficiency level classified as «low». This is mainly due to the lack of qualified
English teachers, outdated teaching methods, and limited access to English
resources. English is an important language in Uzbekistan, as it is in many other
countries. While there are challenges in achieving English proficiency, Uzbekistan
is taking steps to address these challenges and improve the teaching and learning of
English. As the country continues to modernize and integrate into the global
economy, proficiency in English will become increasingly important for its citizens
to succeed in the international arena. Shavkat Mirziyoyev has spoken extensively
about the importance of English language proficiency for the country’s development
and integration into the global community. In his speeches and public addresses,
Mirziyoyev has emphasized the need for Uzbekistan to adopt a more forward-
thinking approach to education and language learning. He has highlighted the
importance of English as a tool for improving the country’s economic and social

standing, and has called for increased investment in English language instruction at
all levels of education.

Charles Dickens’ «The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club» is a novel
that was first published in 1836. It is a satirical work that highlights the social issues
of the time, such as class divisions and the legal system. The novel is widely
regarded as a masterpiece of English literature, and one of the reasons for its success
is the author’s skillful use of characterization. In this coursework, we will explore
the different the system of characters employed by Dickens in «The Posthumous
Papers of the Pickwick Club».
One of the system of characters used by Dickens in «The Posthumous Papers
of the Pickwick Club» is the description of physical appearance. This is particularly
evident in the portrayal of Mr. Pickwick, the protagonist of the novel. Dickens
describes him as «a portly gentleman with a bald head and a double chin, who wore
spectacles and a coat with a velvet collar». This description not only helps the reader
to form a mental image of Mr. Pickwick but also gives us a sense of his personality.
For instance, his spectacles suggest that he is intellectual, while his portly figure
suggests that he is wealthy.
Another system of characterization employed by Dickens is direct commentary.
This involves the author providing the reader with his own interpretation of a
character’s thoughts, feelings, and actions. For example, when Mr. Jingle, a minor
character in the novel, is first introduced, Dickens describes him as «a tall, thin man,
with sharp features and a keen, cunning expression». However, it is through the
author’s commentary that we learn that Jingle is not to be trusted. Dickens describes
him as «a vagabond and a cheat» and suggests that he is «always on the lookout for
some new scheme to defraud his fellow men».
In addition to direct characterization, Dickens also employs indirect
characterization in «The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club». One system of
indirect characterization is through speech and dialogue. The way a character speaks

of every leader’s activity. - Uzbekistan: O’zbekiston, 2017. - 28 p.

can reveal a lot about their personality, social class, and education. For instance,
when Mr. Pickwick is first introduced to Sam Weller, his servant, Sam’s use of slang
and Cockney dialect immediately tells the reader that he is of a lower social class.
Sam’s speech patterns also suggest that he is streetwise and quick-witted.
Another method of indirect characterization is through a character’s actions and
behavior. In «The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club», Dickens uses this
method to reveal the true nature of some of his characters. For example, when Mr.
Tupman, one of Mr. Pickwick’s companions, falls in love with Rachael Wardle, he
becomes very clumsy and awkward in her presence. This behavior suggests that
Tupman is not used to dealing with women and is perhaps a little naive.
Charles Dickens’ «The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club» is a novel
that is renowned for its rich and complex characterization. Dickens employs a range
of methods to bring his characters to life, including direct and indirect
characterization, as well as the use of physical appearance, speech, dialogue, and
behavior. Through these techniques, Dickens creates a cast of memorable and
distinct characters, each with their own unique personality traits and flaws. The
result is a work of literature that continues to captivate readers today, over 180 years
after its first publication.
