The actuality of the course paper. While «The Posthumous Papers of the 
Pickwick Club» was first published in 1836, its themes and the system of characters 
remain relevant today. The novel deals with social issues that are still present in 
modern society, such as class divisions and the legal system. Dickens’ use of 
characterization is also still applicable to modern literature. 
The aim of the course paper is to bring the characters to life and make them 
memorable to the reader. Through the use of physical description, direct and indirect 
commentary, speech and dialogue, and behavior, Dickens provides insight into the 
personalities, flaws, and motivations of his characters. This allows readers to better 
understand the social issues and human nature portrayed in the novel. By creating a 
cast of distinct and memorable characters, Dickens creates a world that is both 
engaging and thought-provoking, while also entertaining readers with his wit and 



humor. Ultimately, the aim of the system of characters is to create a work of 
literature that continues to captivate and resonate with readers long after its initial 
publication. The following tasks are defined in this work regarding the system of 
characters used in the novel «The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club» by 
Charles Dickens: 
− to identify the different the system of characters employed by Dickens 
in the novel, such as physical description, direct commentary, speech and 
dialogue, and behavior. 
− to analyze how these the system of characters is used to create distinct 
and memorable characters, and how they contribute to the overall themes 
and message of the novel. 
− to examine the significance of the different types of characters in the 
novel, including the protagonists, minor characters, and antagonists, and 
their roles in the plot and themes. 
− to evaluate the effectiveness of Dickens’ the system of characters in 
conveying the social issues and criticisms that are present in the novel, 
such as class divisions and the legal system. 
− 
to compare and contrast the system of characters used in «The 
Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club» with those used in other 
works by Dickens, and to identify any similarities or differences in his 
approach.
The goal of this work is to provide a comprehensive analysis of the system of 
characters used in «The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club» and their 
significance in creating a timeless work of literature that continues to captivate 
readers today.
